    I know a few model railroaders, besides friends ones in each of four generations of my family.

    Those people have one thing in common, all have or had girlfriend / boyfriend when younger, and married later.

    So I challenge anyone with named slashdot account to refute my assertion if their personal experience different, in other words who is a slashdotter who is a virgin and/or has OCD but is a model railroad buff.

You speak of ideals in a world where a significant percentage of people do not hold them and are evil. Are you suggesting it's better to just let oneself be a victim and have no tools for protection?

    In 18th century English "well regulated" meant properly functioning.

    "I won't say if I ever followed through or not" is something only someone who followed through would say, of course.

    "unsuccessful couples": number one issue is not infidelity but financial issues.

    Even if not having affair women will get into mode where everything partner does is wrong. Money matters can do it, boredom can do it, husband too focused on entertainment and fun outside the home, or lack of attention and intimacy can trigger that. Those kind of problems have a solution.

    Moon base would have many the same issues as Mars base. No atmosphere from human being's lungs point of view (0.6% of earth's pressure on mars), high radiation, no concentrated water, need for tight recycling...it would be the ideal place to solve many engineering problems of supporting humans on Mars mission.

    Don't worry, the whole premise is false. Assuming usual 3 percent conversion efficiency, the volume of even fusion fuel sufficient to disassemble a planet is sixty six (66) of those 5-7 mile diameter asteroids. That would fit into the volume of the Death Star's 150 km diameter. If that energy could be imparted entirely to a laser beam, it would be sufficient to vaporize an earth sized planet. No reason to put something in the core.

    you don't need antimatter at all. The Death Star's volume is sufficient to house energy store that could impart enough to a laser or any other kind of particle beam to vaporize a whole planet. the premise is false.

    as a plot device, some popular sci-fi stories at the time (e.g. Ringworld series) held that a hyperspace trajectory that passed within say light-year of star was "dangerous", kind of like going inside the event horizon of a black hole.

    yes we use probes instead of manned craft so that is true.

    there are many unsolved problems of humans going to Mars that make it absurd to attempt now. There are problems facing us in the near term that solving would not only benefit humans on earth but would solve some of those issues of Mars trip too.

    For example, pursuing promising fusion reactor designs instead of the dead end of Tokomak including ITER sinkhole.
