Even the steel composition really wasn't an issue, it was standard for the time even if too brittle with high sulfur and low nitrogen by today's standards. Even with modern steel if everything else was the same the thing probably would have sank anyway. The sister ship of the Titanic had a long and safe career for 20 years after the sinking.
