it's estimated that we'll be at the 'tipping over' point of runaway warming when we reach 440ppm CO2 concentrations, which will take about ten years. The world can't transition off of fossil fuels, nor can the economies of the first world and India/China even slow the growth of the use without their economies collapsing. So, we're already screwed and may as well party.
nope, all the legal issues surrounding BSD at the time hindered its adoption, nothing to do with Theo. Neither NetBSD nor OpenBSD have many users compared to FreeBSD and MacOSX
for a sec there I thought you meant JAV cosplay conventions, and was going to beg for a link to schedules and registration, but then realizing you probably mean congregations of nerds as smelly, potbellied, bearded caricatures of fantasy and sci/fi novel, just forget it.
I'd rather see reverse-engineered open source software to do these tasks. If that becomes illegal in the U.S.A. then fine, let the U.S.A. fall behind the rest of the world. the rest of the world is hugely waking up to the dangers of proprietary formats and software, and the U.S. is already becoming less and less relevant in the world for a number of self-inflicted reasons. And this is not an unpatriotic position, the U.S. is taking the path of abandoning freedom and restricting rights, and this DRM business is just one more part of that.

dark matter is also postulated because of the existence of galaxies; they can't have the shape they do with mere gravitation as we know it. That's been known since the 1930's.

but my point is the spectrum of the sun is direct evidence of its composition, just as its mass and neutrino emissions and the solar wind and many other properties are. You seem to think measurements must be made over a distance of less than 10 feet or so, otherwise it's not "direct evidence".
As far as inventing type of matter with arbitrary properties, over 90% of known subatomic particles first had their properties predicted before actually being found in lab. Just considering the multitudes of antimatter particles alone, that was predicted in 1928 by Dirac.

with things heated up so hot they glow we have spectral analysis, lines and intensity of lines: Sun showing 71% hydrogen, 27% helium, and 2% other neat stuff. Pretty conclusive at least for the stuff that's at the surface of the sun and radiating. Now we could argue about the core and what's going on in there, see neutrino detectors and neutrino oscillation physics results of the past couple years.
But maybe we can get our hands on some dark matter, so to speak, the "cold" stuff might be around us and the "hot" stuff might have interactions however rare with our world that maybe we catch a peak.
production of fossil fuels also takes energy, 1 btu of gasoline takes another 0.23 btu to pump and refine. The figures I saw for biofuel were just slightly more than that, one btu of biodiesel taking 0.24 btu energy to produce, with much less pollution when burned and no net carbon dioxide loading of earth.
I think my cat actually rid itself of the excess energy by producing hairball-equivalents, and the more a cat zooms around the more they tend to puke those things up, never quite reaching lightspeed.
Slashdot editors will be replaced by the more intelligent neuron-sparse dolphins, and slashdot readers will continue to continue to have the sex life of a goldfish, spraying semen about the floor in the hopes of an unlikely fertilization.
whoopdie doo, plenty of crystaline structures in oranic chemistry have repeating 3D holes and voids too, you should see some crystals made out of viruses, for example. This is totally unimpressive.
the "evidence" for such outrageous claims comes from ignoring the transformation Auschwitz went from being primarily prison/slave-labor facility to death machine. Sure, in the "early" years they operated like a prison in the sense of having excercise and doctors and allowing letter-writing and marriages, etc. And yes they used Zyklon B for delousing clothing. But in the "later years", the mountains of evidence show how an mass murder machine was built from early experiments (on gypsies, Russian POW, enslaved Polish people) to genocide against mainly Jewish people.
some leaders did that, others not, anyway who would trust anything those monsters said at face value? We know there's some other concentration camps where the opposite is likely [known numbers way low], because true extent and types of crimes hidden as Allies came. I'm just interested in what really happened, and if known death toll goes up or down so be it.
You'll find that the real Jew-haters will have other tell-tales of their agenda (and its a mistake to call it a political motivation, it's way more serious than that). For example, there's a large/infamous site out there saying at top "this is not a hate site" where they talk about numbers in Holocaust, but they also for example have pictures of famous present day Jewish folk next to some of history's criminals who supposedly had some Jewish ancestry to "demonstrate" some imagined genetic predisposition to evil, as well as "proofs" that everything and anything wrong with the world is due to Jewish people, and plenty of other spiteful hateful garbage like that.
But anyone ought to be free to question or investigate the number of deaths, and it's wrong to automatically assume they are jew-haters (which by the way is much more serious problem than a mere political motivation) or label them as such. And just because a Jew-hating scumbag should use someone's reestimation (sure, call it a revision) shouldn't mean others with a rational brain can't engage in legitimate historical research. It does not make the Nazis somewhat less monsters if 900,000 rather than 1,500,000 Jews were murdered at a particular camp, or if 4,300,000 rather than 6,000,000 were victims of the Holocaust.
This is very similar to the problem of anyone criticising an action of Israel as being labelled anti-semite by some of our well-meaning but overzealous famous national reporters who are so afraid of a repeat of the evil and horror of Nazi 1930's and 40's. Well, any good person doesn't want to see a repeat either, but no country/government should be above criticism of their actions
why is it bad to say the initial numbers given right after ww-ii might have been exaggerated? The number of estimated deaths at Auschwitz, for example, has gone from millions to under one million in my lifetime. Millions of pages of textbooks from Jewish/Pro-Zionist educators, however well intentioned, might be a biased source. Yet sadly people who should be for honest historical truth turn into foaming rabid zealots if anyone wants to discuss or examine evidence. Revising or questioning an inaccurate historical account is neither anti-semitic nor an act or racial hatred, though of course there are those hate groups that engage in "revisionism" for the purposes of promoting anti-jew hate. But there are other folk like myself who are fascinated with history, and really want to know the numbers of Jews and other groups of people who were tortured, enslaved and mass-murdered by the Nazis and those who allied with them, and how many died in what manner. Making that subject taboo has exactly the opposite of the intended effect.
now that's just typical tax and spend Democrat talk. The ongoing Republican plan of blackening the atmosphere by burning the products of big energy corporations to make the moon look dark is so much cheaper. This is also the plan to counteract aging and cancer due to too much insolation.
they don't behave the same way as the ionic ones, the types of fire you expect to warn against should be your guide as to the type of detector to get. The ionization detectors are most sensitive to small smoke particles, and the photoelectic ones to large particulates.
hahaha, was just amusing myself, but those are basically the words I have for any mideast terrorist group. They make scapegoats when the real problem is very much Arab culture, and until that changes the troubles over there will never end. As for us, we need to get off foreign oil so we don't give a crap about the middle east, and it's time to realize Israel doesn't need us giving billions of dollars (overt plus covert aid is well over 7 billion dollars annually) to them anymore, they can be self sufficient. Mucking about in the affairs of that screwed up part of the world is just a PITA for us.
If you consider your rulers corrupt, clean your house starting at home. The U.S.A. buys oil, and thus transfers massive wealth to the Arab lands. If this does not benefit enough Arab people to suit you, clean your house. Allah has given the Arab people incredible wealth, you make the U.S. the scapegoat for your own failures which lead to poverty and misery in your lands. the U.S. was allied with Kuwait, so of course we fought Iraq in the first Gulf war. You complain of our supporting corrupt rulers, well we recently removed one and still you complain. Why did you not remove Saddam? Israel came into existence because wealthy Arab land owners sold the land out from under "your brothers" the Palestinian people, which then having gained a foothold expanded. So the blame once again is on Arab greed and foolishness and shortsightedness. If the Arab people had good rulers under whom the people would develop, grow and prosper; and once again assumed technological leadership of the world, Israel/Zionists and the liberation of holy sites would be a non-issue. If the Arab people advanced so they were capable of refining and producing their own petroleum products themselves with their own technology, there would be manyfold times the wealth in their lands. But instead we see actions which bring more poverty, death, hardship, and humiliation. Attacks against the U.S.A. have made more war and destruction on the Arab people and an even bigger U.S. presence in the middle east. The deaths of 3,000 americans in 2001 caused one hundred times as many Arabs to die, and morethan tenfold the number of U.S. soldiers to come to Arab lands. Is your the path to freedom or serfdom for the Arab people?
well, half those companies live on as merged parts of another, can still find their name inside some of the newer systems on components even!

Done't know about this PC-BSD flavor of FreeBSD, but FreeBSD+Oracle has been done at version 5.x and before with Oracle 9i and before; http://ezine.daemonnews.org/200402/oracle.html http://www.scc.nl/~marcel/howto-oracle.html http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=2143+6 531+/usr/local/www/db/text/2003/freebsd-database/2 0030309.freebsd-database
I'd like to hear about Oracle 10g on FreeBSD or PC-BSD, any versions of the OS
