  1. Re:One exception? on Microsoft to Sell Outlook Subscription Service · · Score: 1

A growing trend for small and medium size businesses is to use business webmail providers. A majority of the services on the market allow a point of contact at the business to manage user accounts remotely while the provider manages the servers, mail software, etc. The TCO is a lot lower due to lower costs for not having to install and support an internal mail solution. Also, the business webmail solutions offer a lot more functionality than that of the consumer products (GPG, business footer disclaimers, auditing, compliance components, etc).

I can hear it now -- AOL's innovative feature that separates it from the rest is..... "You've got Webmail!". Groan....

Remember folks, the statistical object represented by 1.86 out of 1,000,000 is 86% more likely to get [insert gloom-and-doom disease of the day (GADDOTD)] than the object represented as 1 out of 1,000,000. These are the kind of fear-based statistics used by infommercials to get people to eat [very expensive] dirt.

  4. Sun Catchup (Solaris 10) on Solaris 10 Released, Updated & Free (Like Speech) · · Score: 2, Informative

Having made a fairly decent living being a UNIX Sysadmin (mainly Sun HW w/Solaris), I have nothing bad to say about Solaris 10, or any other version for that matter. Many folks, including myself, toiled over a boiling hot Sun server by day, and hacked on Linux by night. I used to run Solaris X86, because I was a rabid Sun supporter. My mind opened up several years ago when I realized that whatever you were attempting to do could be done faster and easier on a Linux box. With my Solaris knowledge, coupled with ability to cobble together PC hardware, the sky was the limit and things "just worked". Also, in the early days the Sun sales reps and engineers I used to deal with scoffed and ridiculed my attempts to bring Linux solutions into the company. Now I think it's funny to watch Sun reverse positions to keep from being bled to death!

We can support international signup. We just haven't written the cool, slick interface yet. Leave us a message here and we'll do the manual thing to get you set up.

We do not currently support remote access protocols that utilize plain-text authentication, such as POP3 or IMAP. However, we do support IMAPS. The latest versions of Eudora do support IMAPS, so the answer to your question is "yes, one can use Eudora to access email on Slashmail.org via IMAPS".

  7. Open Source Alternative to Gmail/Hotmail/MSN/Yahoo on The Webmail Wars · · Score: 1, Insightful

Slashmail.org is an Open Source alternative that has more features and better functionality than the well-known email providers mentioned in this article. Slashmail.org is not free, but intended to compete with these competitors' paid subscriptions. Trial accounts are available for those interested in taking a look at the service. We offer unlimited storage, with both webmail and IMAPS access. We encourage feedback.

Yep, I'm part owner. And we are pumping our product, just like gmail/yahoo/hotmail/msn. And yes, it is not a 'free' service as in 'no payment'. However, it is indeed free of advertising, storage limits, viruses, heavy graphics, and we make our very best attempt to make it free of spam (using anti-spam software you can control). We realize we aren't going to get rich from $13.95 per year, but it's cheaper than the competition when you compare features and their upgraded service at $20 and higher per year. Best of all, we use and support opensource.

  9. Alternative to GMAIL on Gmail Adds POP3 To Email Accounts · · Score: 0, Troll

The Open Source email service slashmail.org offers IMAPS remote access, no storage limits, and no advertising to boot. Go here for more information on a serious alternative to GMAIL.

If you want more space for your imap folders, consider switching to slashmail.org for your email service. They use IMAPS for remote access and are completely open source powered.
