  1. Question... on 30GB and 50GB Removables · · Score: 1

Why are they targetting the Windows market?

We'll get back to that in a minute.

Are there that many Windows systems that need tape backup that it makes more sense to do Windows first and Linux/Unix second? I thought servers with high data requirements were still predominantly Unix boxes, though perhaps they aren't targetting servers. Who is their target market then?

Sad reality that Linux people like to avoid is that there are a LOT of NT boxes out there. Yes yes, we know you don't like NT, but the fact of the matter is, even if Linux is winning the server war or whatever, there's still this percentage out there that actually runs NT, whether you like it or not. So there's one market.

Why are they targetting the Windows market?

Users, baby! The other targer market is end-users who think they're power users. I mean, besides Intranets and shit, what does Joe Desktop need one of these for? Hell, what do I need one for? Still, it's cheap and it's sexy. Why not? I've got a credit card! Why target Windows? End users use Windows. Another reality.

Yeah kids, I know you think Linux is great, but there's still a very large market of people who use Windows and spend money.

Right, and I'm annoyed a little too, cause I was the first one that mentioned the Onstream drives the other day, and have been a few other times. I have a few friends that support them, and I think they'd be great for temporary space relief on my hard drive, I could store my MP3s on them... (I do understand though that spooling MP3s off them is an iffy proposition.)

(All Hail Linux! To criticise Linux is to
risk the wrath of thousands of high school students and other sociopaths who can't spell!)

Note to previous poster: I believe this was something Woods himself was saying, not a Woods quote of Katz. Personally, it made me laugh out loud. One of the funniest and truest things I've seen lately. And all too pointed in the Slashdot direction. (I mean, come on - it's almost like Communism or religion here with the Open Source, Linux, and "gimme free music, artists should all sit around and eat ramen while they make me the MP3s I deserve".)

That being said, I don't object to the presence of Katz so much, though Woods makes some terribly good points. I don't read much Katz, but I find that a humanizing effect on this site would be useful, if Katz were to do so. If he's really fixated on his book, then he really doesn't need to be around.

Moving on, Rob... I, like many others, found Woods' criticism terribly interesting to read and plan to go hunt out more of his posts when I get the chance. Why not make it easier on all of us and add him to the contributors here? Granted, he slammed Slashdot quite badly, but what better way to put things right in his own manner than to have a hand in the content? Barring his being too busy, I think he'd actually accept the offer.

(One other note. Rob: I recently got something I did picked apart in a public forum, so I'm sure you were pretty pissed about the "functional illiterate" crack. But I can't say I disagree, and the point has been raised before. You're attracting a lot of attention with this site. Upgrade yourself. You'll take the criticism hard at first, but if you can realize the criticism and that it's not unfounded... add that to your resolve and work harder to provide a good thing. Make sense?)

  13. debatable on Review:Stopping Spam · · Score: 1

One easy way to avoid spam is to not publish your address on websites? Geez, that's kinda lame. How do you make an easy mailto: for customers or potential contacts on a webisite? Sorry, I don't think so.

I also use my real address in newsgroups and everywhere else. I'd rather be easy for people to contact (good and bad) than be a pain to contact. I know other people who munge their addresses to newsgroups, and I always forget to change their addresses before mailing them. So I get bounce messages back. I hate that.

But I've been on the net 6 years now, so I remember the good old days pre Canter and Seigel.

Other odd things: I get a few pieces of spam now and then from a GTE mail account that I don't think I've ever publicized the address on. The spams all have a very similar format in the subject field.

Then of course, there was the time Mute (the record label) spammed some people with a 2 meg attachment or some such. I use Unix, so I just deleted it easily. I can't even imagine what it must have been like for PPP users.
