  1. Re:so lots of applications... on Where The Bandwidth Goes · · Score: 1

    From the article:
All you have to do to blow your monthly download limit with Sympatico or Videotron is to leave your computer running with a P2P file-sharing program turned on

Hey, there should be a law that we can deduct outgoing bytes from the incoming bytes and only be changed for net bytes downloaded. (This should put an end to P2P freeloaders!)

    From the atricle:
Verizon's user allegedly has been swapping songs by artists including Billy Joel, Barry White, Aerosmith, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, N'Sync and Britney Spears.

The RIAA is cruel. If this user's name is released, he/she will become a laughingstock for sorry taste in music.

  4. Empire building and procrastinating on Developing Applications with Java and UML · · Score: 0, Troll

You don't get it: Java/UML is a tool for managers to hire more people and delay timelines for real deliverables, as in "Let's see, I need 4 Rational Rose power users, they'll need a couple months for initial class hierarchy design, I'll need a submanager to supervise them, (you know, this system is going to be damn hard to actually make work, hopefully the requirements will change and we'll never have to finish this).."

  7. Economics on The Continuing Death of Pinball · · Score: 3, Insightful

Pinball machines are expensive and time consuming to maintain, with all the moving parts to be cleaned and replaced - not so for video games. Arcades have been trying to wean us from pinball, and seem to have pretty much succeeded.

Or performance. Even though multiple ways of doing the same thing looks like it does the same thing, it really doesn't and can vary greatly in efficiency.

Ah yes, of course. I was fixated on development time since *I* write program *other* people use ;-)

  10. Re:Poetry or Music? on Hacker Survey · · Score: 1

With Perl, there are so many ways to do the same thing that the only basis for choosing one over another is either artistic or minimal keystrokes. OK, or readability if I had an extra hour to program each day.
