  1. Try Xara! on Alternatives To Adobe's Creative Suite? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am not a design expert to know about its CMYK support - but I can tell you Xara rocks as a substitute to Illustrator. It is one of the best designed software ever. And it's blazingly fast.

I think the _real_ power comes from the fact that software can be instantly updated when it is on the web. Most of it can still be "run" from your computer, but the infrastructure to run it would be something like a browser. And if Firefox continues to improve, this infrastructure will be open-source and there will be no need for a monopoly to push stupid things down our throat. You can think of 'code' as just another form of 'data'. And then, getting it off the web won't seem as blasphemous to you as it does now. (You do subscribe to blog feeds to get "new" data, right?) Please don't jump to conclusions. As one of the comment above notes, cross-domain xmlHTTPRequests are anyway blocked by all the main browsers. The problem in this case is because of a particular way in which the data is stored by Gmail. Calling it a design flaw of JSON is stupid.

The other thing is that despite the shortcomings, they do get my work done. Docs and spreadsheets has a large number of bugs, but I can live with them just because shared-editing saves us a whole lot of hassle.

  5. Re:Performance on Fully Open Source NTFS Support Under Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

I fail to understand your logic. Why would you have multiple people accessing a Windows partition? Either you have a Windows server, or you have a Linux server. I just don't foresee having an NTFS partition on a Linux server (which serves multiple users) being so actively used as to cause performance problems. Also, being in the user space has its own advantages in terms of robustness. Given that ntfs is not documented (well?), I would be much more assured if the module stays out of the kernel. Why do I need to suffer random crashes?

  6. Funny? on Dvorak on Our Modern World · · Score: 1

Funny? My ass. Granted, some of the things described could be thought of as weird, but the article does not in ANY way depict them in a funny manner. And hilarious, it is most definitely not.

  9. Scaling issues on Ask Questions of the World of Warcraft Team · · Score: 1

With such a huge number of subscribers, I am very curious about how the developer team solved challenging scaling issues. What is the number of players online _at any particular moment_? How are these players partitioned among various servers? I see load-balancing as a very important and potentially hard problem here. How did the developers attack it? It would be great to know answers to these in as much depth as is possible without of course giving away any "trade secret"s...

FYI: Ctrl-K for firefox puts your cursor into the google search box. I was annoyed at first due to the Ctrl-L combination not working in Firefox, but gradually got used to the newer functionality. IMHO, this is cleaner for maintaining distinct histories.
