There are a few things that I wouldnt take for free, and a few that I would. I am much happier paying for independent fincial advice with someone who has no interests but my own to think about.
As for virus software if I want to really know that my computer was safe and the data on it couldn't be compromised I'd pay. If all I was really bothered about was doing an adequate job and making sure most stuff is caught I look at the free scanners available.
Always ask this though - if I'm not paying them - why is it in their interest to help protect my computer? I know there are lots of people who want to help protect your computer - but is there anything to actually make them continue providing a level of service etc?
This is just marketing - this won't add up economically for users - will it? I guess they have done trials in places, but I can only see M$ winning at this game.
If you have to pay 1/3 upfront - it could be better invested w/o the M$ stuff on the machine.
Also are there not internet cafes around in cities that will be cheaper and be real "pay as you use"? This seems like an idea waiting for a reason to exist. I think perhaps they should realise that the real way to help bridge any digital divide is not to make money out of the people on the otherside.
Where is the concept of respect in these discussions. The people who are offended by these cartoons and concepts are just normal muslims. Their belief is that it is wrong to show any image of the prophet.
When I first heard this story my first reaction was simliar to most people on here - that freedom of speech is sacred - and people should not be censored. I then talked to people who were offended by these cartoons and realised that the western world just doesn't have any respect or understanding of what an insult this is.
We need to understand and respect people's beliefs more - they are not questioning the freedom of speech - just asking that we respect that they do not like any depictions of their prophet - why is it so hard for us to just respect their needs here?
What would be the bad consequence of just saying - sorry we upset you, we didn't realise it would cause offence and now we have got rid of the cartoons?
Instead we have become aware of how offenseive they find the cartoons and continued to reprint them again and again - in the name of freedom of speech - and have then wondered about why things have begun to get out of control.
On every level this episode shows why muslims, have good reason to feel that there is a lack of understanding and respect for them - and that is why extreemists can then maniulate those feelings and make people violent.
I am sure someone has already been moderated for pointing this out - but it is not Luxembourg that Skype originates but Estonia - easy to confuse I guess!?
Why is it that US newspapers haven't evolved the way they look - no colour in most of them (in my experience - feel free to prove me wrong) Tiny fonts - trying to fit as much on to a broadsheet as possible. I think the lack of evoultion will dampen the appetite for newspapers - they have to make sure they emphasise their benefits - i.e. easy to read at home, on a train etc - feel more relaxing that reading a computer screen - when they do this you get good news papers (along with all the other requreiments for a good newspaper - indepth and thoughtful non-biased journalism).
Now to reveal my colours I like the Guardian in the UK - this is now a full colour news paper in the Berliner size - easy to read and the some of the innovations in there make it a pleasure to read - full colour on every page - glossary pices next to articles - with glossary words underlined in blue in the text - these are innovative ideas that will change how newspapers are viewed - but have not sacrificed quality in any way.
In Britain they cannot force you do decrypt data - but they are about to pass legislation that will make this so see www.stand.org.uk for more information.
