  1. Re:Ridiculous on Computer Software to Predict the Unpredictable · · Score: 1

One way around the "garbage in" problem is to move one level up the intelligence ladder from artificial to human, because humans can filter out a lot of the noise. But What we need is a method of aggregating dispersed human knowledge in an intelligent way -- for example, prediction markets have proven accurate at forecasting elections and geopolitical events. A few startups (e.g. www.predictify.com) are experimenting with the 'wisdom of crowds' model to predict real-world events. It will be interesting to see whether any of these new ideas work.

Perhaps I am simply unlucky, but I have so far had an awful record with Gamefly. The first two games came in fine, but they never received the first game I sent back, and I never received the next game they were supposed to send to me...in the 1.5 months I've been using the service, I'm batting about .500 for the games actually arriving at the intended location.

However, the game selection is Excellent, and the customer support is also impressive. The did not accuse me of trying to steal any of the games, they simply sent the next game on my Q after a week. We'll see if their benevolence holds when I report the next one missing...

Agreed. With that processor, and running PPC to boot, I give it 12 hours of use without charge. Maybe. Why use a 400Mhz when you can use a 133Mhz and a DSP for the routine and processor intensive tasks?

  5. Correction - not supporting Goodlink over RIM on Handspring Shows Treo 600 Smartphone at CeBIT · · Score: 2, Interesting

Contrary to the comment, it is unlikely that this device will support Goodlink upon its release.

While Good does an excellent job of hyping its product, they have yet to release a client for anything but the Good G100, the RIM 950 and 957. When they do, it will be release for the PalmOS in general, so naturally it would be supported with this device.

There is no announced release date for this client.

In fact, it seems just as likely that RIM will release a version of the Treo 600 with BlackBerry service on it, as RIM and PalmSource have also announced a deal.

Really? I support mobile devices for my company, and the only thing people use Communicators for here is self defense. The only redeeming value of them is an excellent speakerphone. Treos, on the other hand, do quite well, both as a cell phone and a very simple OS.

Second, having used a demo Smartphone for about 2 months, it does a pretty good job of being a phone and a very good job of being a PDA. I've enjoyed using it, except that the battery doesn't last long enough.

Also, I'm pretty tired of it blue-screening when I hang up the phone. Seriously.

Is it even legal? If someone sends me unsolicited mail, it takes me time to read/delete it, or at least it costs me to set up a filter to delete it. The cost, then, is shifted to the recipient of the email.

So the sender is requiring the recipient to spend resources without receiving any benefit. Can unsolicited email then, be considered the same as petty theft? Can Bulk mails sent across a corporate net then be grand theft? Or vandalism/destruction of property at least?

Frankly, I don't think Americans have any interest in having a 51st state, half way across the globe, constantly being attacked by extremists, and a half-century behind in technology and infrastructure (imagine the cost of bringing Iraq up to code for the Americans with Disabilities Act alone!). If they wanted the oil that badly, they could have taken it in 1991, or purchased it for a fraction of the cost of a war and permenant occupation.

Where's the benefit, except to radical right-wing idealists? I suspect American forces will be happy to leave Iraq by the time this is over.

American presidential elections are won by capturing the center of the political scale; People who gain a reputation for radical right-wing imperialism are unlikely to be re-elected.

I can't believe those slimy bastards put in a clause allowing unsolicited political calls. They probably argued that it "encouraged democracy" or something.
