I just spent about 10 minutes with a fly swat trying to kill **one** fucking fly that is buzzing around indoors. Does that make the fly smarter than me?
A fly has pretty much a hard-wired brain, but it is highly effective at finding food and keeping it alive.
Some while ago, some researchers managed to get a dish of 1500 (or 15000??) rat brain cells to fly a 747 simulator -- including handling complex actions like landing with wind shear. I bet it took less time to train the rat brain than it takes for a human to attend flight school. I guess a rat brain in a pilot's uniform doesn't pick up as much skirt though.
The Autralian government recently classified crodiles as **FISH** so that crodiles would be covered by fish control regulations. It's not a hard stretch to see a virus being classified as a vegetable.
In this age people become state governor because voter think they might act like their movie characters, or reality & soap TV are more real to people than real life. Joe & Jane 6-pack see the movies, then they get worried that the authorities are not protecting them from these obvious threats. By responding to these threats (even though ficticios), the authorities are sending the message that they're in control. It also does not hurt those feasting on the homeland security machine (for money, votes etc) to keep the "threat" alive.
WM is something that is cut down and written from scratch to be familiar to Windows desktp users. The code is not the same, and the security folk are not the same, so there is a whole new crop of security flaws etc.
The Linux that runs on phones is the same code that runs on desktops, servers etc. This means that by looking at Linux for servers etc, those paranoid security people have also verified Linux for mobile.
Of course you can still do dumb thing with mobile Linux (eg. running as root) and mobile-specific software can still give some vulnerabilities, but at least you have a half-decent start.
which diseases people most wanted a cure for (something you could likely figure out from how many had those diseases to begin with)
Perception and hype are not the same as reality. For instance, TB kills more people than AIDS, yet which is perceived to be more important to treat? There's a lot of discussion and hype about breast cancer, yet prostate cancer is more serious.
No one wants to admit life started out there somewhere
It had to start somewhere, but why did have to start "out there". That's not enough to explain the origins anyway, it just defers the question (ie. how did life start "out there").
How is a meteorite, or Mars, or whatever, a better place to kick-start life than earth?
I guess the cops are worried that they might be terrorists any by climbing the tree they'll be at a higher altitude, making it easier to shoot down planefuls of peace-loving citizens.
Buddy breathing is an option if you're underwater. I think you'll run out of lift pretty quick if your buddy grabs your legs as he falls...
Most divers don't go deeper than about 80ft without doing extensive checks, and doing an emergency ascent from those depths is possible (I've done an emergency ascent from 100ft). I guess parachutes are an option, if you're high enough.
Sure, that fundamental reasearch is important, but too often we see academic and "pure research" that is way out of line with what is useful and really of value in the real world.
If you first do a year or two or real work in real industry, then go back to academia or fundamental research, you're more likely to have a far better appreciation of the industry and more likely to make valuable contributions.
I can see that this might work for gamers or whatever who just click their whole lives away. For a lot of us (programmers etc), mouse movements are interspersed with keyboard actions, so you need a pointing device that is close to the keyboard. My favourite it the cursor pad, a regular mouse is OK too. For a vertical orientation input device you need to make larger movements and keep rolling your wrist as you move from keyboard to mouse. Can't see this being efficient or easy.
Dear slashdot. "I'm thinking of getting laid one of these years...". As parent says asking financial advice on/. is pretty dumb... almost as dumb as asking for sex advice.
Your college probably provides some sort of financial planning service (probably right next door to the sex health adviser).
EU does have more sense than DOJ, though perhaps not enough.
MS were quite clever to get DOJ all hot under the collar about Netscape & IE. These are no longer competitive areas. What is more important is that DOJ monitors future manuipulations by MS. For example, how they are playing in mobile space, how they're playing in personal audio (will their new audio device kill iPod through fair means or foul?) and things like anti-virus products.
For MS's point of view, being able to lock up the anti-virus APIs makes more than just business sense. It also allows them to shut the door on (limited) review of their system by citing some lame excuses like "there is no valid reason for anyone to look at these interfaces, anywone doing so is probably a terrorist!". Loss of that (limited) review would be a bad thing for the industry.
Don't be fooled... If Apple had owned the patent, they'd be gouging Creative twice as hard.
He wants a PDA, not a friggin spelling lesson.
Don't expect a real lawyer to give you a real opinion without getting hit in the pocket.
If you're going to build a distro, or any product for that matter, think long and carefully who you really want to target.
The Irish parachute, that automatically opens on impact.
The Irish coffe mugg, with the handle on the inside.
The solar-powered flashlight that works in direct sunlight.

You expect /. articles to be correct? Maybe the /. articles should be run as wikis then all the fact and grammar Nazis could correct things on the fly.

Right and wrong are always blurred and I can't see how "ethical" can really be defined.
Windows Visa will automatically send the details of people that don't update to the 'no fly' list.
But they'll change that as soon as they need to install some drivers etc.

Perception drives our irrational thinking.

This has been around for many years.......

"amazing"? NASA was promising this level of launches over 20 years ago.
Hmmm..... silly stuff. A bit of R&R has always been a useful way to get over stress. Why is it news if this happens to include some video games?

Hook up to the internet and you add a whole new dimension to doubleclick ads!
