    Most music is purchased by subteen females. "Tone" junkies is an apt description for these consumers of "auditory" hallucinogens. Specifically, large music companies supply a pre-constructed group identity. Something VERY important to subteen females. This identity is delivered by music analogous to the way heroin is delivered by a needle. It is a manufacture of the distribution companies, not of the 'artists'. So, of that $16/CD better figure $15.50 is paid for the preconstructed group identity and $0.50 paid for the pure sonic esthetic .

    Sorry pad're ... I run 3 web-boxes : a k-6/450, Duron900 & XP2100+ on DSL and the performance difference among them is marginal. Excepting a few "flasher" pages, even the primative 4 Mb Jaton_9750 in the K-6 really makes little difference so I'm not pushed to upgrade one of the GForce2s in the other systems for the extra Vid .
    It's not even worth getting the "official" NVidia drivers for my P4 RedFat_8 box. Yawn. Face it pad're, as it now mopes along - even for a performance slacker like me - the web is dead-of-boredom.

    Am I the only one still using fav WinME? It's rock-solid 8 hours at a time ... changes its own diaper after crapping-out and doesn't call home to mommy unless I dial. Keep WinME away from over-reaching dweezles & webtoe dweebs and it does OKey, running my K-6, Duron900 & XP2100+ two solid years ... not bad, huh. Has RedHat ever run a GUI for two years I don't think so. WinME rocks, and did I say it was cheaper than SusE-the-*itch that couldn't run anything but snotty-nose KDE blu-screens!

    Sorry, pad're but the INTEL cpu standalone-prices are NOT the ones to figure. Look at "bare-bones" system costs. I recently got a fine P4S333/P4-2/430watt-tower system at a cost of $350.00 . That's very competitive to any equally robust, capable AMD system. Oh yeah, I also have a *itchy XP2100+ system that is hardly worth the heatsink trouble.

    Sure, I rap to /. on my fav WinME box and yeah the WinX boxes have earned my living on-the-WWW for the last 5 years ... rock-solid 10-hours at a time. And sure, I've casually "kept" a Linux box ( like a hi-maintain galpal )for the last two years. In fact I just built a P4S333/P4@2.0 to keep RedHat_8.0 cozy ... and I PAID for RedHat unlike most dweezles on /. if ya can believe the rap. In those two years not once has RedHat ( or Suse-the-*itch ) approached the easy admin & slick-as-a-horney-rattlesnake-in-olive-oil functioning I require ... and get from WinX. What's the M$-ACCESS substitute, huh??? Nothing!! I tried, pad'res and I would be sleeping under a bridge had I not reverted to WinX. 'Course I pinch pennies, and never have there been as many FREE, usefull proggies for *nix as there have been for WinX: SANDRA specs me out, CRESCENDO does midi & ABIWD my wp. Just count the rest! PROXO, ZONAL, MAILWASHER, AVG, ... I live/die by these covering my azz! ... think I'll stop! NO equivalents to those great plug-N-play proggies exist in *nix. Only recently has *nix GALEON taken 1st place in my ranking of Browsers, ahead of NS_6.2 ... course by now I'm on DSL (nice USB plug), and the folks I work for have introd WinX-specific client software. So to move onto *nix I'd have the WINE & DSL install hassel. So you see, pad'res *nix gives me no vig, no 'percentage' to move over. Meanwhile I can dump all my old SCSI stuff into the RedHat tower and it seems to spit rarely --- who knows, maybe next year ...
