Why can't we build a hybrid hydrogen car? Sure it will take longer that just a hybrid deisel or just a hydrogen car, but it seems like it would combine the best parts of both worlds.
Thats why they send every packet to multiple people to verify the results. Conflicting results should appear and the scientists can execute tests on that data. However, even if there are positive results this doesn't mean anything is found. This is why we have to go back and look for signals where they were found in the past, because there is justified skepticism in any result that says "we found aliens."
The probability of catching radio waves from intelligent life forms in a 4 year window is crazy
You have to start somewhere. Its not really just a 4 year window, since all searches for other civilizations occur one after the other building upon each other and using previous discoveries. This is just the way science works.
The distances they'd have to travel are enormous, and that civilization is probably long extinct
This is irrelevant.
definition of intelligence is also very narrow
And what is our definition?
what if what we think of cosmic background noise is in actuality encrypted data transmissions, meant to be indistinguishable from background noise?
Yes some data may be encrypted, however it is a reasonable assumption that some of it is not. In general most data that we send is not encrypted. If also including data that has been compressed (which would seem like encryption to us) we would just need to find something about it that is not a natural pattern, we wouldnt have to be able to read it.
At about $0.10 a kilowatt hour this comes out to be $10.8. I got the 150 watts is the power output from the power supply (which is not the best number to use).
But with these numbers a computer's electricity is a little less than the cost of a CD.

An IMDb for Books

You do realize that IMDB.com is run by Amazon, don't you?
You may have just ruined imdb.com for me. I hope your happy with yourself now:)
It is another conflict of interest but the extent of which I don't know. How much information is traded between the two entities? Do they use the same database for ratings? Do they use the same sources for reviews? Are they just separate groups within the same organization? I don't know, but I'll still stand by my original opinion that imdb.com is better for getting information on movies.
The problem with amazon is that their main purpose is to sell the product. This is a conflict of interest since they are always pushing some product to you, and in the process influencing people's opinions.
After using it for movies and also using IMDB.com I have always preferred IMDB.com because it has a much broader user base and offers better information. I feel like a good book site could do the same if it is able to gain enough information to get started.
I don't think it is the patent office's job to check the scientific validity of patents. There have been many inventions in the past (such as X-rays) that people believed at the time were scientifically impossile, only later shown to be valid. If the patent office denied patents for things that they believed to be impossible, then as a result they would eventually deny a patent that should of been issued. If they issue a patent for an impossible device, then there is not a big loss, since nobody can make the device anyway.
The patent office should only just make sure that there are concrete plans for the patent, and also that it really is unique.
> I don't know why they are bothering to pay people to blog for the Product. You would think they could simply create a simulated teen
They could pay for a simulated teen, but then they would have to pay a programmer to write it. Also they would have to pay for someone to maintain and update it as new fads are created. This all costs money.
Or they could give a few pieces of merchandise to a few individuals for little cost at all. This is cheaper, but with less control over the reviews. So, they pay people to blog because its cheaper than paying someone to make a simulated teen.
