  2. A look in the trenches on OSS Not Ready for Prime Time in Education? · · Score: 1

Interesting, since I work in Higher ed. Hold on while I check Protege which I use to map our enterprise. Oh, I see that over 80% of our logical servers are running Linux, either Debian, Red Hat AS or Cent OS. It appears that we are using typo 3 for our CMS. It also looks like we are using uPortal for our web portal and CAS for our Web ISO. Looks like we're using Nagios for monitoring, plus other open source projects in various areas. I also see heavy dependance and use of PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Let me check what services have given us the most trouble. Oh, I see it's our closed source applications.

But, I guess they know best. So I had better shut all of this down.

Well that sounds like it is the developers problem.

If you develop closed source software based on GPL it is YOUR FAULT for not reading and understanding the license. If you feel that it's unfair, don't use the code. You can either find something with a BSD style license or *gasp* code it from scratch.

  7. Re:Wonder if Windows Kerberos will be affected? on MIT Warns of Critical Vulnerabilities in Kerberos 5 · · Score: 1

No. SSH provides you with a secure method to log into a particular machine. However, if you have several services (applications, machines, etc) that require authentication it is desirable to have a secure method of not only having one username/password combo but allowing services to authenticate off of that username/password combo. That is where Kerberos comes in.

In the case of SSH it is quite common that its pam configuration is using Kerberos for authentication.

Check it out, truely intersting stuff.

I know the parent is being sarcastic but I wish to inform those (hopefully few) sysadmins that are using automatic update for their company machines.

Use SUS. You point your windows clients to update from your SUS. Since you approve updates that will be placed on your machine you won't get suprised by an automatic update.
