  1. Good move by ABC on ABC To Offer Full Shows Online · · Score: 1

If we are going to see advertisements, which I think is perfectly fair for content given away for free, I much prefer to see them during "commercial breaks" rather than product placement. I'm noticing a lot more product placement (sometimes subtle, sometimes 'punch-me-in-the-face' obvious) these days, and I think it's probably due, in part, to the rise of PVRs and downloads. This is content that can't be stripped out, and even if a paid subscription model of shows comes out, will still be present.

I'm happy with this decision from ABC. I don't like ads (nobody does) and I'm sure there will be some repercussions to local advertising contracts, but it seems like a fair step forward.

This is true, but I've never been able to figure out how to make my changes to the styles permanent. Every time I open a new document in Writer (I'm using 1.1.4) it uses the "default" style settings. I want my "Heading 1" to be 14pt, but it's always 16pt. I want the "Default" to be 10pt, but it's always 12pt. I try to change it, but I haven't figured out how to save it. The OpenOffice help is mostly useless...I tried the technique that seems "most" like it would save my formatting (Format->Styles->Catalog->Organizer->highlight Default->"Commands v"->Update) but it doesn't work, and secondly it's absolutely ridiculous if that's the way to "save" your formatting choices. What point is having such a great Stylist, when there's no way to make permanent changes to the styles? If someone knows how to fix it, please let me know :)

  3. Re:Does it make much sense, though? on Time to Try a Linux Desktop? · · Score: 4, Insightful

That's not much of an argument, considering OO is one of the very few applications that doesn't come with a windows Installer. If you consider MS Office, you pop in the cd, put in a serial number, click next a few times, and it's installed. The links are in the start menu, the files are automatically associated etc. You missed out a few steps regarding apt-get. First, you need to configure apt-get to point to a server that has OO. Secondly, you need to switch to root to install. Thirdly, unless I'm mistaken, you need to manually set up KDE/Gnome links or create a desktop link. I won't switch to a purely Linux machine until I don't have to mess around with text config files anymore. I can do it (I'm a comp. engineer) but I don't like to. Even on my Mandrake 10 installation (which does have a nice OS installer I must admit), I can't get my soundcard to work reliably in XMMS. I had to disable KDE sound, then install other sound plugins, and even then sound only works half the time. Ugh. I will switch as Linux keeps improving (as it is I use almost 100% OSS in Windows), but it's not there yet.

As the article text states: "We really thought it was never going to spread because it's so stupid," said Mikko Hypponen, manager of antivirus research for F-Secure. "But people seem to be clicking on it." Just goes to show you that no matter how much cork you put on some people's pencils, they'll still manage to poke themselves in the eyeball. Honestly, who out there is so dumb that they'll run an .exe email attachment with a subject line "Test" and a body including "Yea, Test". Mandatory computer usage licenses, anyone? ;)

  6. Independent radio can still be good on Who Needs Radio? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Almost every university campus has an independent radio station where almost anybody can get airtime for a few hours, and say/play what they want. I know that very few people tune in, but I really enjoy it. You get a very eclectic collection of music, and usually some "interesting" individuals. I don't think radio will ever die, even the commercial stations, mostly due to car drivers and the ability to hear music that you didn't have to actively search out, even if the music is only being played because RIAA lined that radio station's coffers.

There is a program called BitTorrent out there that does just that. A server needs to run Tracker software (very lightweight, basically just maintains a list of active clients), create a .Torrent file (With the tracker server information and a file listing/checksum).

As people connect and download the software, a P2P network builds up around it -- as you download parts of the file you are uploading to other clients. The original file hoster just needs to transfer enough such that at least 1 other person has the complete file and the P2P does the rest. Pretty slick.

  10. I'm no fan of RIAA but... on Yet Another Look at CD Sales · · Score: 1

I'm with everybody else when I think RIAA and the record companies themselves are horrible for holding the prices of CDs high and paying artists absolutely crap but I can't disagree with them that cd sales are dropping due to piracy. I read the article and the author certainly to have done his homework about empirical data but I can only speak from my personal experience and that, due to the ease in pirating music, both myself and all of my friends have significantly dropped spending on cds. I used to buy about 1 cd a month, now I'm down to about 1 cd every 6 months. I listen to way more music on a way more frequent basis. I don't know a single person that has started buying more cds after they started pirating. I think they dug their own grave with their policies but to disagree that pirating isn't hurting their business seems silly.
