"Support basic html inside/* comments, so its damn easier to read and visually see, 100% ascii blows man"
You've gotta be fscking kidding! Code and comments can be hard enough to understand at the best of times , without some coder shoving blink tags, bold , tables and god knows what else all through some C++ code. And what happens if those code comments are read by another IDE/editor later on that doesn't support HTML?? Is someone supposed to wade through the HTML by eye?? Get a fscking clue...
Slashdot usually has interesting stories , but , oh boy , its it a short news day or something? A story about PC power supplies?? Jeez christ , what next , the top 10 power cords? A quick chart rundown of the most popular blanking plates? Cmon guys , you can do better than this!

Unfortuntalely this sort of thing is directly a result of the problem that the original article mentions. Newbies coming into the business (and I include managers there , not just IT people) have been brought up on Windows usually , far less unix than used to be , and virtually no mainframe experience. Consequently for them , a machine crashing now and then and needing a reboot just because an app (not the OS) has got itself into difficulty is the norm and they accept it. Occasionally they wring their hands in frustration as to what they can do to improve it but they're too clueless/stupid to know what the solution is. Windows is a fine desktop enviroment but its a pile of sh1t for running a 24/7 backend setup not only because of the dubious reliability of the OS itself but also because PC hardware (not matter how "high-end" the OEM claims) simply does not have the reliability of true high end systems. Theres a reason true high end vendors charge through the nose proper high end hardware and its not just because they can (tho that does come into it!:). For the same reason (hardware) I wouldn't use PC linux for a 24/7 setup either.
Oh give it a rest with the fscking marketing speak! SOunds to me like you're fresh out of newbie training yourself or you wouldn't even go within a mile of someone uttering that BS newspeak, never mind come out with it yourself.
"Excuse me, but you are wrong. A non root user cannot create a binary, set user to root, then set the setuid bit."
Never said they could. You install the app as root then let the users run it as a normal app under their own user ids.
"And installing the app is the problem. Ever heard of "preinstall" and "postinstall" scripts? "
Ever heard of "tar -xvf" ? Thats how I install stuff. Doesn't run any executables unless someone has re-written tar without telling anyone. If you're lazy and decide to use an app that comes as some sort of self extracting binary then you deserve all you get.
"You picked the wrong guy to call "windows fanboy"; I used Unix exclusively until well after Win 98 SE was out"
Just because you install an app as root and it is owned by root does NOT mean it runs with root priviledges. If you want that to happen you have to set the setuid bit. Go read up your Unix 101 for Dummies book then get back to us.
Yes , please do. Who said this had anything to do with instant response? I'm pretty sure even the US mil has figured out 7 days > 24 hours. This is for carrying large bulk cargo where there is a case for getting it there quicker than the month it would take by ship but isn't required ASAP. As for your idea about using ships then hovercraft , er yeah , that would work real well in a land locked country like afghanistan surrounded by mountains.
I'd love to see a chopper that could fly non stop for a week and cover 12,000 miles. Besides which you've completely missed the point - these airships are for carrying extremely large loads efficiently (ie frugal with fuel). Completely the opposite of what a chopper does. The only aircraft that comes even remotely close at the moment is the Antonov 224
Not to mentio the fact that 500 tons is the payload of the *initial* version. I'm sure it could go up to thousands of tons if the will is there. The max payload limit for copters was hit years ago by the russians and wont be going up again anytime soon.
>Well, as a Dutchman I can tell we seem to have won our battle with the sea (for now, you could add).
Building a big dam is hardly the same as stopping a hurricane.
The problem is you can't destroy energy. Whatever you do to the hurricane its energy isn't going away , just moved about. And at some point that energy will be released and the consequences of that don't bear thinking about.
"And also to make it so as if you try to steal power from the railways, your records will play at 11 and 15rpm and your clock will take an hour to move on 20 minutes "
Not sure I really want to plug my wallclock into a 25Kv line!
"It also points out that open technology standards - the digital equivalent of a common gauge for railroad tracks - are "
Lets hope the digital equivalent is a bit *more* standardised than railway track gauge or we'll end up with the virtual version of 2ft gauge, 2ft 6 , 3ft, meter gauge, standard gauge, irish gauge, soviet gauge etc etc etc
... who cares about CSS? Slashdot works and it works well. It aint broke so why fix it? I'm not interested in flash pages and fancy fluffy layouts and all that other crap that comes along with site "upgrades" , I just want to be able to read articles and comments. Period. Leave slashdot alone!
Actually you clueless idiot , greenland was named that way to attract other settlers, not because it was green. The ice sheet has been there for millions of years , long before humans set eyes on it. And it seems to me your agenda is based on your hatred of anything left wing , not anything to do with scientific evidence of which I suspect you know little and care even less, so long as you can shoot off another irrelevant political salvo.
How do you know? Sure theres natural variation but theres also forced variation too. Currently we can't be sure which it is but if we wait until we are sure and find its global warming it'll be too late then.
A poor attempt at deliberate misunderstanding. As you well know Kyoto won't stop hurricanes or any other storm for that matter. It might however lessen their impact. But hey , who cares so long as Joe "fat" Schmo with his trouser dept issues can drive around in his 5.0 4x4 burning fuel like its going out of fashion.
Quite obviously this was mocked up in a hideaway in the arizona desert where they faked the moon landings too. How stupid do they think we are? Everyone knows the earth is flat and was made in 7 days anyway. Pah, spacecraft my holy ass!
It probably wouldn't make them much better but after they've installed it they'll probably find they can't speak or walk properly anymore and keep falling asleep at random so they'll have forgotten all about the measles.
I'm not sure it did run out of fuel. It was supposed to land at Athens and it only crashed about 30 miles away from it. Unless the pilot intended to land in Athens flying on nothing but fumes I suspect it crashed for another reason. Plus there were some big fires in the crash , things that tend to be caused by lots of fuel.

Yes , the power supply is important. But so is the case and the chair you sit

Err , not many hovercraft could cross an oceanand not many ships or hovercraft could cross a mountain range. Shall I continue?

Not true. They have actually been increasing in

Their brains wouldn't swell up since they're not exposed directly to the atmosphere. They have this thing called The Skull surrounding them you know.
