But you won't understand the whole "it's not just a bunch of information put onto an optical disc" unless you actually ARE a musician, actor, or whatever.
Well, I am a game developer (which means I've been a programmer, artist, sound designer, etc.) and I oppose the idea of "intellectual property". So it's definitely not enough to be one those persons you mention to understand that this isn't just a bunch of information - I for one don't understand it.
Tough copyright penalties mean that there will also be tough penalties for breaking the GPL license which is also enforced under the terms of copyright law.
Will any of those corporations breaking GPL go to jail?
Hmmm, you rpost is ranked 3 now and http://www.thuk.co.uk/ is ranked just 4 in my Google Pagerank Status extension. Maybe you should change it to such empty standalone page and get better rank.
And they did not set the background color to white (Yahoo doesn't do that as well) assuming that everyone has a white background in the browser's window.
So why do they claim that intellectual property is any different?
The difference between a material property and intellectual "property" is the same as the difference between scarcity and abundance. Material property rights deal with the problem of scarcity of material/tangible goods - there's no need to exclude someone from using something which is abundant.
More - IP is now a kind of uber-property, because it can force tangible propertly owner to use their property in a way the uber-owner wants (e.g. MPAA deciedes how you can use your DVD discs, players, recorders, computers).

Are you sure? Did you do double blind tests? Or you just convinced yourself that you heard the difference?

The market: EU companies will gain the advantage they had lost due to unfair practices of the UE citizens (or customs offices).
The only unfair practice here is taxing the trade.
