The article, and I would disagree with you. "Microsoft in August warned of a similar flaw, which is related to an error in the way Internet Explorer handles JPEG images." It's similar because they are all image types, that can be "displayed" in a webpage automatically by default, and thus execution of the virus is not dependent on user intervention such as a double click.
Both jpg and png was flawed in Windows, MSN Messenger, and even other image apps by a buffer overflow exploit where a specially crafted jpeg file with a virus "attachment" would crash the program and execute virus code. I have to agree that if they are still finding flaws, we'll be stuck with them for a while. Just imagine, every Windows 98 computer out there probably has this problem too, and there's no way it's going to be really fixed. It will never be safe to run even "safe" things like jpg and mp3 on old computers now. It's very, very disapointing news.
In a Messenger program that is always accepting new input in the form of pictures and messages, it's especially dangerous because anyone who's online will instantly become a zombie spewing out infection to their friends on their contact list. You really will get viruses through your personal contacts more than spamming-strangers in the future.
Any student that takes a chance and says something against authority, or does something that some board members may find offensive, run the risk of suspension. A couple years ago a girl in Florida was suspended for her Halloween outfit because she covered herself in unused condoms, and encouraged other students to take them. The official story from the school was that she was being disruptive, and refused to change shirts, but really it was about a repressive administrator that felt that "handing out condoms admits to being sexually active, and that was against the policy of the school which is abstience".
Schools are messed up places in some parts. If you didn't always toe the line, and didn't get suspended, consider your school a progressive one.
But can you trust Microsoft anymore with stopping spyware from installing on your computer? Have they added protection from Sony's rootkit? What will they do with Claria/Gator/GAIN spyware technology that they now have access to?
Microsoft might remove spyware apps that break Windos, but is their goal to really remove anything that can spy on you, this being the company that's introduced Microsoft Genuine Advantage?
"did you see anywhere in my post that I remotely suggested that smoking "never hurts anyone but the smoker""
Not explicitly, however your post was all about blaming the non-smoker for not liking a world where some people take it upon themselves to burn carcinogens and stick them in their mouth. And then the smoker is surprised when other people take offense to being subjected to nasty smoke coming from their mouth, and waving their burning stick around, dropping their ash and butts everywhere? Smokers have to take responsibility for the widespread litter, destruction, suffering, and death their drug causes. Not everyone who uses heroin is going to be destructive, but I'd bet you'd consider any heroin junkie at least partly responsible for supporting the demand for their destructive drug?
If you want to smoke, do it in your home away from anyone who will take offense to it. Out of sight, out of mind. The goal isn't to harm or restrict smokers, it's to get rid of smoking alltogether so don't take my attitude personally. I feel the same way about heroin as a do about nicotine: Attack the drug, not the junkie.
"The Bejing office claims to be a satellite of the U.S. Lunar Embassy, run by Dennis Hope. "

But seriously, this scam is as old as the 1960s, if not older. Is it my duty as a Slashdot reader to point out that a 30 year old scam copied recently, is not news? No, it's not, so forget I said that, because it is news since people are still falling for it.
By the way, I've got a star to sell you. A nice one, in the Orion Belt.
Remind me, what's "Life, Liberty, and Good Government" about? Oh, that's Canada's constitution? Never mind if you're not subject to that constitution, but "life" most certainly guarantees citizens of the right to breath clean air that doesn't contribute to health problems. Smelliness probably doesn't qualify, but cigarette smoke is more than just smelly, it's a carcinogen.
"you obviously think you don't have bigger problems." Buddy, you don't know problems until you have trouble breathing, or an unknown illness possibly triggered by cigarette smoke. There's nothing more important to life than the immediate need to breathe, tempurature/pressure, then water, food, etc. When smokers mess with my right to life and even my enjoyment of it just so they can satisfy a needless drug addiction, it makes me think they are a bit nuts, insensitive, junkies, whatever yeah.
I need nicotine like an extra hole in my head. Drugs aren't the answer to everything you know.

Because most people who defend their right to smoke so strongly, are strongly addicted to nicotine, and the drug warps their sense of reason so they can justify stupid things like smoking.
"smoking out in the open is not a risk for anyone but the smoker themselves, "
And that shows what you know: nothing. There are loads of people can can have a breathing attack in open air smoking areas, brought on by the smoke. This is one reason why in Canada, some sports stadiums that don't have domes are smoke free, because you can smell the ruddy smoke from 10 seats and 5 rows over from the nicotine junkie that just can't wait 3 hours to light up.
I don't think I've seen a worse case of/. moderation, where they gave your senseless ramblings a +5, and modded my insightful reply down. I guess there's a lot of smokers on slashdot looking to justify their addiction.
Last year I had a recurring case of urticaria, hives, and usually when I went to see the Dr. they'd gone away. I took pictures of them once, and showed the doctor the photos on my camera, to help him diagnose what kind of hives they were.
"you don't count as a benefit making people happy? bringing a little enjoyment? making a good time better? happiness or contentedness isn't good enough for you? who are you, the Grinch?"
Smoking might make someone happy, like crystal meth might make someone happy, for a time. But there are real health consequences that they could live without bringing upon themselves and the ones they love. It isn't going to bring their family any enjoyment to bury their smoking son early because of his daily drug habit involving smoke damage to his lungs. Life is about being happy when you can be, but why sell future happiness by doing drugs now? The sad reality is that many people start smoking for peer pressure reasons, then they are unhappy when not smoking because they are going through withdrawl. It happens with all sorts of drugs to most people, so why start?
If you want to be happy in the long run, don't do drugs, and find other ways to live life on the edge. Do something that terrifies you like act in a self produced video, sing in public for money, patrol the streets looking to scare away johns or prostitutes, or ask a group of pretty girls to dance with you. All likely intimidating things to do guaranteed to get your self made drugs flowing, and you're not doing anyone any harm, and they are things best done with friends too.

It's pretty shortsighted to miss that second hand smoke is chemically identical to the smoke that is inhaled "first hand" by the smoker that gives their lungs smoke damage, and eventually cancer or trouble breathing.
" "smoking in public places" issue is just a red herring to distract people from the REAL health risk"
Junkie are you? Smoking is a "real" health risk, don't you see? Saying one fume is less bad than another is the red herring. I'll take banning smoking in public for $500 Alex. And we'll work on restricting gas powered lawn mowers and ATVs in Final Jeopardy when we've worked our way to there.
The thought that any kind of smoking would be "Safe" or "safer" is complete nonsense. Smoke fumes of any kind cause smoke damage to lung tissue, that's just one reason why people who breath smoke in cough. Smoke is toxic air, and toxins are not safe by definition.
The 3 drives came about as a bit of poor planning. I was intending to set up RAID, using two identical 80GB drives, but found out too late that one drive has to be SATA for my RAID to work, and both are IDE. And then the Ghost I had wouldn't copy my system from my 40GB drive to an 80GB properly, so I ended up leaving the 40 in there too. So I have 200GB of HD, on 3 drives, which is ok for backup as long as I don't get nailed by a virus, power surge [I have a UPS] or fire.
Far be it from me to start a flame war over fireballs and highballs, but I don't get drunk, and don't care to. Talk about a waste of money, time, and health.
I was simply pointing out that not everyone is impressed with random peoples' ability to consume too much alcohol and then brag in public how little self control or good sense about alcohol they have.
http://www.zug.com/pranks/powerbook/ I've been considering a laptop as my next upgrade, since it will use less power, have wireless built in, and be quieter than my desktop with 3 hard drives in it. It will work better as my entertainment center, if it has a TV capture device in it. And I need to upgrade my P-P-P-Powerbook anyway, the screen is cracked.
With a prodigy like this, there's also a high rate of early death. He'll feel like an outsider, and so if he doesn't shoot up a school, he might still kill himself, or come to despise humans enough that he'll make flying cars with a serious flaw just so people will die.
What's it with people getting drunk, and then bragging about it on the Internet? This is no less than the third alcohol related posting on this thread alone? Are almost all astronomers trying to look like jocks by getting plastered before they impress the ladies with their large scopes?
I'm glad someone got the joke. Of course Google is spying on you, they have a technology called "adSENSE" after all. They "sense" things, in order to sell things better. It's pretty much the defined goal of spyware.
