OMG Girlz Don't Exist On Teh Intarweb!

The Escapist has a brilliant article penned by a young woman who has to deal with blatant disbelief at her existence. Why? Because there are no women on the internet. From the article: "This is the story of my internet life. (I'm not quite sure if it's a good or bad thing that I have an internet life, but internet life it is.) I'm a girl, I play games and I exist on the internet. Or so you think. Time after time, I get told I'm not a girl and that I don't exist. It's happened so much that I'm beginning to think that it's true. So, I spend some time getting to know them. Who are these mysterious creatures called girls if they don't exist on the internet? What does this mean for the men of the internet?"

Girls exist on the internet. It's just that most of their existance is based around whining (like this lousy Escapist article... why they keep showing up on Slashdot, I don't know...). Girls don't exist on the internet..? Then how do you explain Friendster, Makeoutclub, Livejournal, Deadjournal, eBay, suicidegirls and the other countless sites that consist of nothing but pathetic chicks rambling on about every single miniscule event in their life and whining about highschool-style romances and betrayals and jealousy? Not to mention all of the slutty chicks trolling for male attention online.

Girls on the internet are about as relevant (to me, at least) as girls on Jupiter. Who wants a chick that spends all of her time parked in a chair porking-out while surfing the internet all night long? Same thing I don't get about guys who want girls who are into gaming.... Why? If I want someone to game with, there are other dudes. The last thing I want is some chick that I'll never see because she'll always be online or arguing with me about who's turn it is to do something on line or spending all of our time instant messaging each other even though we're six feet apart in the same room.

I prefer chicks who don't even know what this "internet" thing is. And the ones who do, I just pretend they're guys in the first place.

See, here's the thing: most of the girls on the Internet probably don't actually care if you want them. Amazingly enough, there are a quite a few attractive, intelligent, computer-savvy females in the world who might enjoy doing some of the things (some of) us guys do. Some are even into gaming, programming, math, science, and other things that (some) guys are into. Another amazing thing: some of us guys are *really* into those girls. My girlfriend happens to fit the above description. She runs Linux at work and frequently ngrep, ethereal (ususaly tethereal), understands regex's and grep, and has been known to write perl code on occasion.

I bring all this up not to say "ha, ha I have an awesome girlfriend" (well, not just to say that), nor am I suggesting that you should like the same kinds of girls I do. But equating "girls on the internet" with people who pork out surfing the internet all night long might be a very narrow view of who these girls are. Some of us like girls that can actually challenge us at things--even things we like to do.

Game terms like corpse camping and ganking are fine -- they're unique to the world, but they're certainly in character. After all, you're playing someone who can't die, and yet is killed repeatedly. It's very hard for two big beefy male barbarians to relate to each other when they're being played by skinny geeky computer nerds (i.e. "Swords are cool!" Role-playing is difficult, and even in a pen-and-paper group, there is a separate channel for talking out of character. WoW doesn't have this as much -- it has a bunch of channels, all of which can and should be used for OOC conversations. So it's harder to cut off the real-world from your game playing, if you desire such an environment.

Case-in-point: I would love to turn off the general channel in Alterac Valley -- it's filled with whining and drama from beginning to end. But the fight is organized between bouts of drama, because there isn't always a full raid group (unlike the smaller battlegrounds), and the general channel (and random shouting) is the best place to do it.

    - Denizens in channels I'd frequent would be more reluctant to believe that I'm a female, and very often ask for pictures. When I would refuse these requests, I'd get the aforementioned flood of "U R a D00D lolololz"
    - While actually playing the game on servers, I'd almost never mention that I'm a female. I learned to do this because whenever I would mention my gender, I'd get the pix requests tenfold, and the excessive chatter (sometimes inquisitive, but most often crude) would deter me from the action and ruin the experience.

This list, of course, has some exceptions. While part of a online gaming clan, I was once a ranking officer of a section of the guild responsible for playing a particular game. During a clan match, one of the members found that one of our other members was cheating, and brought the questionable screenshot to my attention. While I was in the process of bringing this to the clan leader, I was subject to a rather vicious attack, one that focused mainly around the fact that I'm female, and of course must be a "camwhore" or "extremely fat and stupid", of which I am neither. He still got ejected from the clan, but not without dealing the damage and attacking me in front of 100+ clan members.

What has all of this taught me? There are times when I can be proud of being a female gamer, and other times when sticking my neck out like that will end up with my head rolling. I learned that it's far easier to just let my gender be a mystery while playing online, instead of letting my gaming experience being ruined by asshats.

Surely not! There was no way most of the channel was gonna believe this was genuine after all there were quite a few people in the channel who had been friends with her for ages. Still had a heck of a good laugh with the idea. Needless to say it was about to get funnier.

I liked the article. It's not "a joke," it's a constant pressure of disbelief that can be wearying and frustrating.

Sure, I know there's a lot of females playing various online games. But many men seem comfortable believing there aren't. Even one man I have played online games with and talked to on the phone for years and he's also talked to my husband on the phone for years - says things like "I just assume everyone's a fat guy with a beard."

In some societies, the punishment for social misbehavior was ostracism. Everyone pretended you didn't exist. This is an emotionally painful thing - perhaps more so for women because of the way girls are socialized. Women players of online games are tired of being "ostracized" not for any rudeness but for the fact we are female!

The next, and almost as bad thing, is the seeming denial of the femaleness of "ugly" or "fat" women. Yes, hello, women are women. They are women if they are fat and they are women if they are thin. They are women if they are pretty, ugly, young or old. 18 year old girls not yet out of high school or 65 year old grandmothers already retired, all women. But no, to these boys this article mentions, you are not really female if you are "fat and ugly." It's the next thing to not existing!

For a good take on that, I'd always recommend "The Women Men Don't See" by James Tiptree Jr. (Pen name of Alice Sheldon, another woman who apparently had to pretend to be a man to have another 'women don't exist' world take her seriously).

Women exist and are people. Their appearance is irrelevant to internet gaming. If there is a woman in your "WoW clan": she doesn't care if you want to have sex with her, and she doesn't have any obligation to prove she is "hot" to you. She's a fellow player like any other and all that matters is her gaming skill and courtesy. Pretend she is your sister or your mom if that helps you treat her better.

There's the usual assumption that someone is the same gender as their PC, if only because it's the norm, and not the exception, at least as far as I have experienced so far. If I find out differently, it just takes a moment to adjust mentally, usually for voice recogintion or in the case when it's someone I've know in Real Life for years ("Wait, Fratboy Mike's playing a chick. I hear him belch on TS, but he's got a female PC. OK, this will take getting used to..." Yes, it's a stereotype, but that's because he plays that image up on occasion in RL). The advanced sophisicaiton of games doesn't help if they are well made, as poses, body movement, etc. are signals as to what gender a person is. ( http://journalofvision.org/4/5/2/article.aspx )

The only time I find Gender Bending truly awkward in an MMO is gramatically. When a male player is playing a female character, or vice versa, it takes a moment to sort out the grammar. "She can pull, she's the tank... he? Dammit, which do you prefer?" :-)
