So, over here the bug was in Linux - the ptrace exploit. And it wasn't fixed fast. Too many eyes - just looking - not coding. What happened to the concept of peer reviews/analysis. And fast bug fixing, etc. etc.
I'm now beginning to think that good open source software is a myth too! This is the second such exploit - earlier one was BSD and ssh was screwed!
ReiserFS sucks in stability (atleast the eariler versions did). There were times when the power used to suddenly go off and when I rebooted there were parts of my files which had been swapped!! Really pissed me off and I switched to ext3 since then...
Cool, this SCO lawsuit could make all the Linux vendors come together and unite into one big mean fat mama which would kick SCO's as and then probably M$'s ass
I think Gnu should help. Try submitting on their site. If you code according to their guidelines, and if your software is useful enough they will include it in some package (something like what binutils is). Your program will then automatically get into *all* distros:)
What if... (and that's a big IF) This guy has been secretly employed/paid by SCO/MS to do this, thus damaging the GPL and all works based on it. Another FUD and a mud slinging match...
I just wish - things could be done so easily on the web. Most of the web sites that I'm developing could very easily have been console apps. But I'm stuck with PHP and tousands of $ signs that come with it.
Well, I've tried a lot to separate Business Logic from Presentation Logic - but it just doesnt happen, even though each php script of mine has: include_once("common_funcs.php"); right at the top.
Though PHP aint that bad - I wish there was a better way to do stuff. Probably it's got to do with the statelessness of the HTTP protocol.
Well, this reminds me of an MS.Net presentation we had in our Universtity last week. The speaker was talking about XML and Web Services as though MS had invented it. And was going on ranting and raving about Open Standards. And the misleading names they give to their products. The developer platform names end with a.Net and the Web services also end with a.Net When asked, it took him a full 5 minutes to accept that the two were unrelated and that any XML aware software could in fact access.Net services (in theory) and that VS.Net (or similar) stuff was not needed.
My point is that they have started targetting developers here in India. They cannot get much out of sales cuz almost everyone uses pirated stuff. But there is one huge developer base in this country - a potential which they wouldn't want to lose upon.
And then there was standard FUDs about.Net & Java.
All in all, it was excellent marketing, and I am sure almost all the students must've thought what a great platform MS is!!
Do we really need GPL? Think about it. Most people who code open source/free softwares do it for the love of it. They do it because they get their kicks out of it when they see people actually using what they've written.
And most open source developers dont have the resources to spend thousands (or probably millions) in litigation fees. So, if they've released code in GPL, and some company uses that code, and doesnt make their code GPL what can the developer do about it.
I used to hold the GPL in high esteem till I thought of it as this - "hey, you saw mine - now show me yours"
I mean, what if today I want to write some code and sell it. If I use someone else's code - I need to open up mine too. Face it - GPLed code doesnt fetch you money. So, just because some other person didnt want to make money off his hard work - I wont be able to do so either !!
Probably I'm not being able to express my logic properly, but we sure need something more than GPL and something more to define the *real* meaning of open source.
I didn't even know that you had a *per CPU* license. I mean its the same goddamn box.
Well I guess I wouldn't be knowing cuz
(i) I use linux
(ii) Whenever I use windows I lookup crack.txt copy it and press "Accept":-)

In another story on Slashdot....
Has anyone successfully used Linux to wash enterprise underwear!
Sheesh... This thing is getting worse every day.

Password after cleaning up the whole damn mess - "Screw Linux GNU/Hurd In Ten Years Time"!! :)

So M$ *does* get sued ;-)

30%-40% CPU Usage - whoa. What happens to poor me - with a PIII 550 MHz, 128 MB SDRAM and KDE running all the time.
I switched from RedHat to Gentoo and KDE stopped crawling. God knows what will happen with ReiserFS4.

Can they go aroung asking for money - even without proving themselves in court?
If they lose the court battle - can Linus (and IBM) sue SCO for defamation - and claim damages?
Nandz.

Maybe - just maybe

Has the scons site been slashdotted?
And I just checked out - Gentoo has an ebuild for it too. Go Gentoo!!
Nandz.
Most of the posts above say that information should be free and no one should be allowed to withold information.
And whenever there is a talk about spam or privacy the whole slashdot community cant stop hanging or shooting the "defaulters"....
Strange?

Just thinking...
Whenever a new user connects:
r _profile();;
make_secure_connection();
do_login();
get_use
do
{
display_menu();
}
while(do_stuff(get_choice()))
do_logout();
break_connection();
