Yes. Personally, I am getting deep into XUL, and there is a lot you can do with it, including making your own widgets using XBL, and having dynamic GUI data using RDF.

Apparently Mozilla is going to release a separate, cleaned up, developers toolkit for creating applications using Mozilla technology. I think once that is released, you are going to see a lot of applications being built using XUL.

Right now, all this is pretty buggy, but in a few months, I think it will be ready to go prime time.

  3. OS Opinion Anybody? on MacOS In A World w/ 2 Microsofts · · Score: 1

I don't understand how something like this could have made it onto Slashdot. It is poorly written and has no basis for its claims and predictions.

First of all, Apple has always been a hardware company. Now, this might not be true in a few years, but it would really be a hard transition to make, if impossible.

Apple is optimizing the Mac OS X for the G3 and G4 processors. The OS is made to run on the iMacs, the PowerBooks, and the PowerMacs. Not x86. It would be a sad disaster to see the OS on x86 because it would take YEARS to support all the different hardware configurations and pitfalls.

They would have to take the BeOS strategy, only support a limited amount of hardware. Doing that is not exactly consumer friendly, as people don't care what hardware is in their computers.

Therefore, I see no MacOS X on the x86. It would be a failure unless (maybe) it was aimed at the workstation market where people are willing to configure their hardware around an OS.

As for Steve Jobs pulling a rabbit out of the hat? He needs to pull out some new G4s that run faster than 500 MHz. Right now, RISC processors should be able to have the MHz advantage because of their simpler design. They need to whip some Motorola asses, because they are being held back by them.

In conclusion, I hope that a new Microsoft embraces MacOS X and possibly Linux down the road. Hopefully the new company will redesign their software so it can be more easily ported to other OSes. Just don't look for Apple to port their OS to x86.

P.S. Apple could possibly create their own closed x86 platform. It would have a lot of advantages for Apple.

The article states that IBM believes it is 2 years ahead of its competators. Well, I think they better act on their belief and prove it.

I can't figure out why a Copper PowerPC has not been released yet. It has always been in the wings for 2 years.

Also, I remember way back when in the days of the optimism over the open PowerPC Platform, there was some information about a PowerPC 615 processor with built-in x86 emulation. I don't remember if the chip was designed by Motorola or IBM, but that should have been great technology released to the public.

So, I am skeptical about IBM immediately acting upon their advantages. If they wait 2 years to do it, there is no point.

It is really a shame that the PowerPC G4 is currently only at 500 MHz. RISC processors should easily have a MHz advantage because they are simpler in design. Man, imagine a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 available today. People would definitely notice.

So, IBM, prove your new advantage.

XML is not the only thing that can be cool. There is also DOM (Document Object Model), the way XML can be accessed and manipulated. There are different versions of DOM, and the functions keep progressing.

To tell you the truth, it really does not matter if a document is XML to be DOM compatible. You can make an SQL database DOM compatible. You can make a filesystem DOM compatible. You can make a binary Word 2004 file DOM compatible.

If companies and organizations make everything DOM compatible, it won't matter very much how the actual data is stored. Just as long as it can be accessed using the same functions.

Imagine if there was a DOM compatible filesystem... Hell, a server could use the filesystem for a database instead of something else. Can you imagine the efficiency improvements! Scot Hacker wrote a script to use the BeOS filesystem in a similar manner. He has a website running off of it, www.betips.net. I think he has the site running off a cable modem (or used to), so please don't slashdot it, just take my word for it, or visit it later.

Anyway, XML is only one option to store data. XML has a lot of potential, and I think it is one of the best routes to go, but it should not be the only choice.

Also, I think that Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Web Page editors, etc, are all going to become synonymous over the next few years. It is likely that they will use XML and XHTML (XML namespace).

Also, please support Mozilla (mozilla.org), the organization has potential to expand beyond making a new web browser suite, as maybe the next major project could be implmenting better XML support into *nix.
