  1. Tortoise CVS on Windows Source Control for the Lone Developer? · · Score: 2, Informative

I have had great success using Tortoise CVS. It allows you to use a local directory as your repository rather than having to set up a CVS Server.

It integrates into the Windows shell so you can very easily see what files have changes visually from the icon, and all normal CVS operations can be done from the context menu in Windows Explorer.

  2. Excellent News on Neal Stephenson's The Confusion Released · · Score: 2, Insightful

When I started reading Quicksilver, I came to the horrible realisation that there were two more of these drawn out historical tomes to be released before the vaguest possibility of a new work of the calibre of Snow Crash or Cryptonomicon.

With Confusion being released its now only one more to go.

I am hoping he still has another science fiction masterpiece left after his excursion into the Baroque cycle.

  5. Basic Training Advice - EXERCISE! on Nerds in the Air Force? · · Score: 1

Make sure you are physically ready for basic training. Run, pushups, situps, pullups at least a few times a week. The primary aim of this is to prepare your body for the stress of basic. I saw too many people turn up that obviously hadn't done any running prior in the lead up to basic and many of them developed injuries and/or had a much tougher time than they would have anyway. Other than that just take basic as it comes, go with the flow, try not to stick out and and draw attention to yourself and it should be a valuable and worthwhile experience.

  6. Direction Finder on Souped Up Mods for a Souped Up Vehicle? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I want a device to track my car down when I cant remember where I parked it in a large parking complex. Possibly a gps location sent to mobile phone though that relies on owner carrying an accurate GPS and phone. In my ideal world it would be a small device which triggers an ultrasonic or other beacon. The device can then act like a compass and points towards the car.

Wow, if you want to be a federal law enforcement agent you need to pass a physical and background check. Is anyone really surprised? These agencies hire civilians to do specialised work who don't have to meet the physical requirements. If they are hiring geeks just to support tech law enforcement they don't need to be federal agents just support staff. The actual agents who carry guns, get out of the office, and arrest people probably do need to go through training which preclude the grossly obese. Also on background checks: as someone who has gone through the process elsewhere they aren;t looking to eliminate people because they swiped a chocalate bar when they were 10 but more to weed out those who have ideologies and weaknesses that preclude them from doing the job of enfocing the law and maintaining loyalty to the govt.
