Why couldn't the candidates be screened. Surely there must be a way to tell who has a greater propensity for contracting cancer.

There must be another method of shielding other than thick lead plates. Maybe something like a Faraday Cage, only for radiation.

I would be happy to take the risk, sign me up as well

They aren't. They are just going to try to get it back down safely. The shuttle fleet is aging, like the old CH-46 helo's, and needs to be replaced. They have become dangerous and unreliable.

I never cared for the shuttle program. It relagated the space program into a fleet of satellite tenders. That might be fine for cable television, but not space exploration.

I use Linux, and supposedly I can make rss work, but I haven't been able to so far, and I don't really care that much.

There is something I think you may have missed - You can search for your own entry (or enter a url) if it isn't in Google's stock list.

Just click on "Create a Section" at the bottom of the sidebar, and you will get a search box.

I have already used it to add "This Day in History".

  4. Re:Am I getting old? on The State of Solid State Storage · · Score: 1

I had an AST Premium 286, and it had one of those cards - something like 1 MB.

The idea was right, but the time was wrong. Now we can do it; Solid state hard drive with flash memory backup.

The problem has always been: 1. moving parts and 2. heat.

As long as we're still using silicon, there is going to be a problem with heat, that's why we can't have a solid-state hard drive the size of a brick with a terabyte of storage capacity - it would just get too hot.

But remember that germanium was replaced by silicon, because those old germanium devices were always melting.

What material is a suitable semiconductor and can replace silicon? Even if it was rare, we could eventually synthesize it.

This would really work well for robotics and space work, because nothing would wear out, and it wouldn't cost millions to fly up there and repair something.

  5. Re:This "paper" is a mess on P2P Manifesto:Peer To Peer Study/Project · · Score: 1

Back in the early '80's, an effort was made to eradicate hand-rolled cigarettes, because the papers could be used to roll dope. When it was pointed out that aluminum foil could be used for the same purpose, they changed their tack, but not their attitude.

Going after the downloaders is just stupidity. They have to go after the top-level providers, not third-level distributors like they did with Napster, nor their rather insignificant clients.

I use Linux exclusively, and torrents are the best way to download distributions and .iso's. I have never downloaded music or any sort of video - just legitimate data.

I will not tolerate having my torrents monitored any more than I would submit to drug testing. It is all a load of horse biscuits.

Sounds pretty BASIC to me - The one that always comes to my mind, is Bender drinking a 40 ounce bottle of "Old Fortran" (A play on "Old English 800" malt liquor, of course - pretty hard stuff!).
