The funny thing is, Ubuntu was poised and could have taken the desktop, but they brought out their own version of Metro before Microsoft did.
We are a victim of the "Designer". The "Designer" isn't a critical thinker who solves problems. They're not a project manager who understands the needs of the people doing the work. They're not process improvement specialists.
They're fucking ARTISTS.
Here's their job:
In these stories, there is always an executive. He makes the decision if things will go ahead. But, he never sullies his hands with tools like ordinary people, and has no real understanding of how things get done or what qualities a tool should have. He's completely ignorant as to what SHOULD be done, like the designer, and he's too full of himself to learn what he needs to know. So, if he can, he green lights the project that was brought to him by a slutty blonde, and if there's no slutty blonde, he green lights the pretty looking project and goes home.
That's how these things work.
So, when you're looking at Metro, and Unity, and Gnome3, and wondering what the hell happened to the powerful tools you rely upon and used to love...
Whoever thought it was a good design choice, shifting the focus halfway across the screen after the user explicitly put focus on the search box... I sure hope they're no longer working in IT. That was just gross incompetence.
When I open a new tab in chrome, and try to do a search in the search box, it shifts focus instantly to the url field.
Can anyone tell me how to prevent this? It makes searching google using a url as the keyword a huge, ginormous pain in the ass, and it interferes with what I'm doing on pretty much a daily basis.
Is there any compelling reason for them to "stick" with something? Having the choice is a positive good. Unity's lack of options is what drove me away from it.
Muscle memory. There is nothing more significant to a good user interface than being friendly to developing muscle memory. Everything else is secondary. Once you develop muscle memory, you don't care much what it looks like because you don't look at it. If you can't develop muscle memory, you won't ever enjoy using the device.
That's why the many devices that are pure touch screen driven suck. They demand your constant attention like a mewling infant. The push to add hot spots and gestures and voice to all these touch screen devices is driven by this truth.
Mark was not talking about users. Mark was talking about the phone industry.
I hate to waste the mod points I used, but...
It's not about partnering with carriers, FFS. It's about partnering with people who want to build handsets and sell them. In the "Hey, our guys down in engineering tried this and it didn't work" sense of the word partner. Of course they're going to think about the people who are going to use the phones. Who would build a phone if they didn't think they could get anyone to use it?
2001, if I'm not mistaken. And discussions about distros misses the point, which was that idealism protects people without legal teams who want to develop things without fear of being sued later, and that they are a small user base of tremendous significance even if you're not one of them.
Freedom is letting people use what codecs they want, not forcing them to use a handful of really terrible ones.
Wikimedia are serving up data. Accusing them of forcing people to use terrible codecs is like accusing someone of restricting your right to eat beef because they opened a fish and chip shop.
" Internet Explorer never will, but their market share is dwindling"
Why, yes! Everyone should ignore 50% of their potential market through some half-assed ideological argument! IE may be "dwindling" but it's still half your potential market, fuckwit. If you want to run a company that only targets half the people it could then be my fucking guest but everyone else wants to actually hit their potential market, not their artificially limited one.
First, a good businessman recognizes that some clients are just more trouble to do business with than they are worth, even if they want to do business with you.
Secondly, unless you've got a mental illness, once you've met your needs and those of the people who rely on you, you recognize that money is not something to hoard, but more of a vote than anything else, the means by which you choose which of your peers to elevate and which to diminish.
If all you ever do is chase money, you're always another mans tool. You're not setting the agenda, and you have no real power.
"So, you're funding Microsoft, empowering them to continue with their vicious behavior, are you? Well, you don't GET any fucking pudding, asshole, and I don't CARE how much money you have. Piss off."
Being able to say things like that is the reward for being industrious beyond your needs. It is how you make your power felt.
The whole issue is about idealism, not practicality. In practice, MP4s are available on pretty much any device.
Unfortunately, that idealism is shooting wikimedia in the foot, because there are platforms that don't have open source codecs installed by default, leaving the "average" user unable to view the videos.
So in their zeal to pursue "openness", they've closed the doors on the people who matter most: the users.
When I was first starting to use Linux, I tried many distributions, but settled on Debian and Ubuntu.
When I was setting up my desktop, I found Debian incredibly inconvenient. I wanted Java, and Flash... there were a great many compromises that I wanted to make, and Debian made those compromises a real pain in the ass. Ubuntu was perfect, it let me make all those compromises by simply clicking a button.
But I didn't use it on the server when I was doing development. When I was doing development, I realized that I might fail in my endeavors, but that if I succeeded, I was going to end up rolling out to who knows how many different boxes... possibly a great many. If I wasn't careful, some gatekeeper could make my project unsustainable as a consequence of it's own success.
Most people aren't concerned with the second case, only the first. But, the people who ARE concerned with the second case bring a HUGE amount of value to EVERYONE with their creations, including you personally. Their idealism is very, very important, and deserves respect, even if you're not the intended audience for their creation and will never directly use it.
Better question is, who the hell tries to gain an unfair advantage over other athletes by having millions of dollars worth of resources dumped into their clothes, then expects to be taken seriously when they ask for a variation of the rules because those clothes are slowing them down?
The best games have all the elements that are not essential to game play abstracted away so they don't distract the players. Like Chess, or Go. Increased realism detracts from game play.
I think Slashdot and all you foreigners should apologize for blatant Anti-Chinese bias! You try to make a bad image for China....not your country, not your business, but you must meddle in our affairs. I think you act out of jealousy because of China's advanced technology.
We rely on you to manufacture just about everything we use. It scares us, and it makes us insecure about ourselves. The lesser among us need to either deny the truth of our dependence upon you, or make you seem like primitive beasts of burden, or both.
I think it's a good ruling. There's too much artificial scarcity in the world, and it's easiest to see in the realm of "intellectual property". When ordinary people think they have accumulated value in their "intellectual property" holdings, they're less likely to support putting a stop to this vicious scheme.
I think he should have run amok and killed them, for the benefit of all mankind. He found an evil monster who poisons people and they tried to destroy him. He's obligated to kill them, as far as I'm concerned, and you're all obligated to help him now that you're aware.
Why would someone ignore all the warning signs and stumble blindly ahead on a path to certain doom? When others who did the same all shared the same fate? When trusted community members spoke up and said "were asking you to stop because we care?"
Why would anyone ignore all of the clear warning signs of impending death?
Cigarettes are either a stimulant, or a depressant, depending on dosage. Which means, if you're tired or depressed, it will fix that, and if you're anxious and upset, it will fix that too. It will increase your emotional equilibrium, and make you cool.
Cigarettes increase the quality of life of those that smoke them. That's why people do it.
If you don't understand now, it's because you're refusing to do so.

Go take it out on a designer.
I don't think "controversial UI" counts as "evil."
What about offering tools to exploit you by making you pick an option without considering if it's in your best interest?
Does that qualify?
Why are you searching for URLs? If you add another word it'll be fine though - you can simply add a " ." if you like.
Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks.

They were attempting to use fear to make people do... what?
No, they weren't terrorists. Not every murderer is a terrorist. Only the ones who have demands.
They're not terrorists if they're attacking Israel.
Don't they know you're supposed to grind it to dust with your nail file and burn it to melt the frame?
What are they teaching you kids in school these days?

What I want to know is, what are we going to do about the absence of Asian people in professional basketball!

I'm embarrassed for them.
But not anything we actually need. We let them make toys. Meanwhile, we feed them.
Is the weather nice in the dream world you live in?

Gangrene at 60? Sounds like you have some defective genes in your family shrub.
Can't really see any point in sticking around any longer. Why would you want to?
Deciding not to breed is the best decision any human can make. Grandiose sentiments be damned.
I so wish I could cut your throat and watch you bleed out on the soil.
