That is where it's merit lies. Violence and sexuality are important parts of the human experience, and they have a place in art, but only in art that is actually trying to comment on those aspects of the human experience. Art is supposed to provoke thought and open the mind, not close thought and rouse the base instincts. Any thug or whore can do that.
Oh, and my spouse is a professional fine artist, and I move in artistic circles as a consequence. I know a lot more about the history of art and the mechanisms by which a modern artist makes a living than most non-professionals, thanks. Perhaps you ought to stick to arguing your point and refrain from accusing people of ignorance from a position of ignorance.
I would say that violent and sexual imagery are the primary reason for the degeneration of art in the modern world. Just because people will pay money to see a carnival full of freaks, gladiators and strippers doesn't make it art. Art is not simply spectacle.

So, I won the debate again. Relieved my history teacher, who was a little worried about his class leaving having learned a skewed and incorrect understanding of the world.

Is "natural selection" even happening anymore in humans? When we were living in caves, and a baby was born with a major physical or mental defect, that baby was not able, or even permitted, to survive. Now, due to our increased technology and compassion, we can and will keep almost any baby alive by almost any means. Not that that is a bad thing, but i am stressing that there is no real natural selection happening in humans anymore.
We're selecting for a stronger motherhood instinct. Those that don't have it take birth control, and their lines go extinct. We're also selecting against logic and attention span. Those that have it choose education over family, and their lines go extinct. Any human characteristic that leads a person in this society to participate in "planned parenthood" is being winnowed out of our gene pool. We're selecting in favour of passionate people who have a lack of self control and rebel against the system.
Natural selection isn't random. It's determined by the environment. Smaller patterns that don't fit the larger pattern disappear. Natural selection is all about extinction reducing diversity.
Kind of off-topic: but I think we're going down a slippery slope when we start screening DNA. It works against the process of evolution. What if there's a new fatal disease that only people with the breast cancer trait are equipped to fight?
Screening DNA could also be viewed as increasing mutation in the population by selecting DNA combinations that wouldn't normally arise.

What we have is crappy because shoddy designs and materials were used to save money, prohibitively expensive to use because it is privately owned and viewed as nothing more than a vehicle to tax the masses, and the people inside are packed into too little space and bombarded with so much propaganda that it's reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange.

If it's open source, why lease? Why not just make one?
If it requires sophisticated tools to make one, each community should have a set with documentation, and any person should be able to use the community tools to make their personal transportation as needed.
There is no justification for indenturing yourself for your entire adult life aside from the greed of a few.
