Their concept of cloud computing, while compelling, is ultimately unworkable, due to nothing more complicated than market forces. If there is no money to be made in it, no corporate entity will become associated with it.
So what? You've never heard of a co-operative before? Never heard of publicly funded works for the common good? Corporations aren't the only structure humans can use to collaborate. And looking at how things turned turn out, they don't seem to be a particularly good structure, either. They repeatedly keep running things on the edge of collapse, calling it efficiency, and putting the extra resources up someones nose or wherever the hell it disappears to.
If all the other women in the village think the woman is a whore and put their money where their mouth is by actually throwing rocks at her, who am I to tell them they're wrong? I don't live there, I just read propaganda written by parasites...
Do you not believe in peoples right to govern themselves?
One man's "power user" is another man's "too much free time on their hands".
Any time spent configuring the tool prior to use is overhead that reduces the productivity of the tool.
I remember when I first switched to Ubuntu and Gnome from Windows. I sat down at my computer, mindless slave to routine that I am, and started looking for housekeeping tasks to do, like I was used to. And I was kind of disjointed, because I was so used to dumping a half hour into screwing about with Windows and accomplishing nothing productive on a regular basis that I did it obsessively so things would be ready to go when I had work that was urgent. But there was nothing like that to do. I just stared at a computer which no longer needed me.
It felt really weird to just walk away from the machine and go for a walk in the park, like I was doing something sneaky that I would pay for later. Took weeks to really adjust to all that extra free time that I had because I didn't need to keep screwing about with my machine to keep it properly functioning.
If you want to tweak things, try planting a garden.
I see what you tried to do there...
Would you like to know why you failed?
The option you so cleverly described is still favorable to being butchered with a machete.
I expect you to slit your wrists as an act of contrition.
So, your justice system doesn't execute people who violate the laws of the land?
Is your problem is that they execute whores, rather than giving them a talk show where they can be a role model?
Is it that their community takes responsibility for justice in a personal way while you pay someone to bloody their hands on your behalf like a coward and pretend it makes you better than other people?
Oh, and they use rocks, not machetes. Everyone has to throw them with their own two hands, so they will learn that justice is serious and ugly business and not to be taken lightly or treated as some sort of money making game.
I expect you to keep acting like an idiot until the fateful day that you're the one buried up to your neck in the dirt, and never experience a moment of contrition.
The only "hacking" practiced in Afghanistan is when the Taliban punish a woman for showing off a sliver of her skin.
Those bastards... they ought to stuff her full of birth control, stick her in a minimum wage job and force her to have sex with her boss. That's how decent folk treat their women...
Sounds like a great and useful tool for oppressed people to fight back against occupying armies, be they domestic or foreign. Wonder how practical it would be to make em and just give em away to people for free...
Bill Gates took a common good, walled it off and called it his property. He wasn't a shrewd businessman. He was a thief who destroyed massive amounts of value, created chaos, misunderstanding and distrust among technical workers and set both ethics and technology back decades. There are few if any individuals in the history of mankind who have caused more damage to our species than Bill Gates did. He ought to be shot in the face and forced to apologize to the person who shot him.
I dropped out first year, spent 5 years seeing the world and working in a multitude of different industries. Then I tried to apply for a job that I was eminently qualified for, and they told me as a matter of policy they couldn't hire me, if I'd had a degree in basket weaving they would have given me the job on the spot because they really needed someone with my skills.
So, I went back to school and spent 8 months getting a diploma so I could get my foot in the door, got the highest grade in the history of the school, and have been building world class applications ever since. I first taught myself to program out of a book when I was 7 years old and knew how to program in half a dozen different languages before entering high school, so the whole thing was really a bit of a joke.
Repeatedly over the years I've heard from my co-workers that they learned more from working with me than they ever learned in school, that my work is so well crafted that you can just read and understand it like reading a book. Managers rant about how they've dealt with software developers for years, but no one ever actually understood enough to give them what they actually need until the met me.
Make of this whatever you wish, I could really give a fuck. I know my own value... I'm just sharing this for the sake of others who might need to hear an encouraging story to help them keep struggling to make something of themselves.
I'd almost mod you up, but "classroom training [is] a time waster" is an exaggeration. (Well, unless you had shitty teachers.) The whole point of going to college is to engage in interaction with faculty, students, everything. You're only in class a few hours per week. The rest of the time is just as important. For that reason I wouldn't give much credence to someone with a degree from the University of Mom's Basement.
You shouldn't give credence to someone with a degree from the University of Mom's Basement. Nor should you give credence to someone with a degree from anywhere else. You should look for experience if you want to know that they're skilled, and people should learn on the job.
Personally, I kind of look down on people who stay in school. They're insulated from dealing with real world problems and they're treated like little children, so they never develop responsibility that isn't arbitrary, contrived and without real consequence. From what I've seen, most of them are really there because they're lazy and it gives them an excuse not to work.
Unless and until you do something meaningful, education is no different from masturbation.
It seems to me that if you hire people who learned online and paid for a degree, you need to pay them more so they can make ends meet on their debt and have an adequate standard of living, while if you hire people who learned online and didn't pay for a degree, they can have a decent standard of living for less expense. Which leads one to the idea that businesses that insist on employees having degrees will be less efficient than those that do not, and therefore less successful.
Personally, I've always found classroom training to be a time waster and a distraction from real learning, Kind of like weekly meetings, except more frequent.
So, you would actually advocate that act of murder?
I think the propagandists, the money-changers and the war machine makers are guilty of crimes against humanity. I think they should be held accountable for those crimes, and punished appropriately.
Why is it that you always read about someone shooting up a school, or a MacDonalds restaurant, but people just go to work at General Atomics day after day without getting their heads blown off like they deserve?
There are a lot of problems in life where the actions you would take to mitigate risk guarantee an unsatisfactory outcome, even if that unsatisfactory outcome is less painful that the worst possible scenario. And there are a lot of problems where you can't conclusively say how the actions you are taking to mitigate risk will affect the possibility of an unsatisfactory outcome.
This all by itself is enough to explain why wishful thinking exists and is useful and important.
If you look at the history of civilizations in the world, competitive attitudes are contrary to survival, and cultures that embrace them are generally a flash in the pan. Co-operative civilizations last for thousands and thousands of years where competitive ones generally destroy themselves within a couple of dozen generations of man.
I imagine these civilizations always think their ideas are novel and powerful achievements, just like we feel today, and that the reason for this is that these types of civilizations fail so utterly that their ideas not preserved, but are lost to time. That's why they always seem novel and progressive.
I'm an Aussie living in Melbourne so I get the joke. Occasionaly we get a news report of a London heat wave with a few days around 30degC, old people are dropping dead and young people are splashing around half naked in city fountains. It seem bizzare since a hot day here is 10-15degC hotter and we don't have dramas with old people until it gets around 40 or above.
The reverse is also true... you guys are absolute pussies about the cold. I remember standing outside my house in a pair of shorts and my bare feet smoking a cigarette on the coldest day of winter while everyone else in the neighborhood was bundled up with winter clothes and giving me weird looks.
You want to send your head on a trip, go from -40c Ottawa winter to +40c Melbourne summer. Felt like I was on hallucinogens for a week.
At any rate... nice to see them doing something intelligent with that waste heat. Personally, I've been heating my home with my servers for a long time, and only had to turn the heat on a couple times through the winter last year. Been thinking it might be smart to set up some sort of rig to move them downstairs in the winter and to room upstairs with an open window and an airlock during the summer.
According to the Koran, it is a sin to loan money at interest. It is wrong to achieve wealth without doing work. It is slavery. No one is permitted to do it.
According to the Tanakh, it is a sin to loan money at interest. It is wrong to achieve wealth without doing work. It is slavery. It is permitted to do it, but only to non-Jewish people.
This is the crux of the issue between the Islamic people and the Jewish people. The Jewish people are encouraged by their system of values to use exploitative economics that they themselves recognize as evil to enslave other cultures and rise ascendant, and they do so actively and in a co-ordinated fashion.
This is also why WWII occurred. The exploitation that was being enforced on the German people justified that war, just like the oppression that is being enforced on the Palestinian people justifies any actions they take to liberate themselves from their situation.
You can't make peace when someone still has their foot on your neck, and it's wrong to try.
This isn't a racial thing. It's about cultural values. There will be people of all races in the gas chambers when this inevitably comes to a head, and they will belong there because of their own deeds, just like last time.
The entire justification for the free market is that people who don't approve won't overrule you by vote, and they won't kill you for what you're doing, they'll just stop doing business with you and ostracize you, and thus everything will get better by reason of evolutionary forces.
Yet people who are pro-free-market always get their panties in a wad whenever people start suggesting that this or that company ought to be boycott for what they're doing.
The owner spent over a month painting the place, toxic fumes to work in day after day, a dozen Orthodox Jewish animators sitting around doing nothing but scamming the government and playing video games and making noise about how much it sucks that they can't find a girlfriend who is both Jewish and attractive, while the owner is knowingly facilitating them, and me finding out that they're reselling my time for 1000% markup and using that money to fund genocidal war by fraudulently funneling it out of the country in the form of religious donations. Then when I tried to quit, they attempted to have the third parties I was working for charge me with intellectual property theft and have the immigration department deport from the country.
Still feel guilty for the time I spent working there... wonder how many bullets I helped pay for in my naivety...
I wish I could moderate the article "-1 flamebait". A better term is "Western Liberal Democracy", that's all the good things that we all agree on, and yet isn't exclusive to a single country.
Doesn't the current state of the world challenge your faith that the things we've been agreeing on are good things even in the slightest?
If the things we believed in were actually good things, things would not be so incredibly fucked up. If western style democracy actually leads to good leadership and empowered people, how do you explain the psychopaths who currently wield power, the plummeting birth rates, the destruction of the family unit, the endless aggressive wars, the desperation in the population?
Maybe it's time to critically examine all these "good things" about our culture we take for granted. They sure do seem to have led us pretty fucking far astray...

I always find it funny when people point out how inferior MySQL is on a somewhat sizable site run by - MySQL.
Is there a less trivial site?

Did anyone else notice that his little toy database is practically useless without InnoDB, which was written by a third party and is owned by Oracle?
What's he going to do, make another toy and cross his fingers that someone will come along a second time and redeem his craptastic creation?
What a joke...

Close. MONEY is proof there is a Satan. Income tax is proof that he has a sense of humour.

I think the propagandists, the money-changers and the war machine makers are guilty of crimes against humanity. I think they should be held accountable for those crimes, and punished appropriately.
Right. I'm a brutal asshole who advocates the act of murder. And the people who make and sell killer robot drones are a social grievance.
I think you need to re-examine things.
