    Perhaps someone can illustrate to me why I'm wrong and it really is good for application development and I'm just missing something every time I come to look it it (perhaps because the books and documentation are almost all aimed at animators+designers, not developers?).

    It's a shame you spent so much effort writing all that and none on Googling, because there is plenty of information out there.

    Adobe's own application platform for Flash is Flex. OpenLaszlo is an open-source XML based programming language for developing apps in SWF. Flash itself also has a substantial component collection for app development, and finally, there are dozens of third-party ActionScript IDEs and compliers available.

    That's why Microsoft is introducing Silverlight. Flash is threatening to become an OS-independent application platform which could make Windows irrelevant.

    Wine is a chance for Linux to be less obscure on the desktop (it is more or less a successful server OS now, on desktop it has been around 0.5% and not growing).

    Sure, OSS has THEORETICAL quality control

    Mozilla has an actual 16 person quality control team, probably as many as a comparable proprietary product.

    The trojan itself uses a Windows-specific exploit, so Linux users will be safe.

    Interestingly, Google has founded an open-source security group to coordinate responses to threats like this.

    SAP gives customers access to their source code (view only, not to modify).

    Google's application protocols are available to anyone.

    Preventing a monopoly from exploiting its position in another market is not punishing success. It's allowing others to also succeed.

    The "free and deregulated market" is a myth promoted by large companies who like to stack the odds in their favour. The market only exists because the rule of law is enforced by government.

    Active Directory is a bastardised mixture of LDAP and Kerberos hooked up to file and print services. The only difficulty in moving that away from Windows has been because login protocols of Windows clients were not standard and not documented.

    The Samba team has always intended to replicate AD functionality in Samba 4, and no doubt the the EU antitrust prosecution, which forced Microsoft to make server interoperability information available to competitors, will make that easier.

    Even better is when somebody builds one based on an ARM all in one solution that won't be able to run Windows regardless how much incentive or political pressure Microsoft brings to bear.

    Nokia has been doing that for a while with the N770/800/810 machines.

    Ummm, ever used Windows Mobile?

    It's a festering unstable piece of crap which is not compatible with any Windows desktop software.

    Windows Mobile is a large part of the reason people are looking to replace PDAs with these mini laptops.

    Just because you don't see the value offered by Microsoft products doesn't mean that the rest of the world has to agree with you.

    The "Get the facts" campaign is Microsoft's own advocacy site.

    If Linux was actually considered, but wasn't competitive, Microsoft would have been able to show that. They can't, which makes their claims deceptive.

    It's called a "Joe Job"

    It's been around almost as long as spam has.

    I was fairly active in chasing down a couple of Australian spammers a few years ago, and had to deal with thousands of bounced responses and constant blacklisting as a result.

    Perhaps you missed the link in my post, which if you're an Aussie is forgivable since it refers the US law which makes it illegal for US companies to bribe foreign gov't officials.

    Australia has similar laws, and penalties which include the confiscation of profits from deals achieved through bribery.

    I read the link in your post, and provided an example of how Microsoft has evaded that law.

    In TFA, Negroponte seems to be saying that countries like Egypt are holding back from potentially massive deployment because the XO doesn't run Windows.

    That's unlikely to be because they're in love with the Windows OS.

    When Libya ordered $250 million worth of OLPCs, Microsoft announced the founding of a huge North African training scheme. Libya promptly ordered Intel Classmates instead, and shortly afterwards, their Ministry of Manpower was rewarded with the contract to run 48 Microsoft Academies throughout North Africa. It's likely the officials involved will become wealthy men.

    No doubt other countries in the region, including Egypt, are being offered similar enticements.

    I'm developing auditing apps in OpenLaszlo and deploying them on N800s. It's got to be one of the best RAD combos I've ever used.

    That's all a bit emo for me.

    I started my editing career on a four-plate Steenbeck, migrated through Fairlight, Amiga Vlab Motion, Premiere (on Mac), Quantel and Smoke.

    There's very few editing setups I haven't used at some time or other, and I can guarantee that the OS is the least of my concerns, provided it doesn't crash.

    It'd be lovely to have the luxury of geting all precious about "how Aqua looks", but frankly, I'd rather just get on with the job.

    Yeah, that slapping a "bubbly GUI" on top of BSD was soooo easy that several FOSS outfits have done it.

    Gnome and KDE are the main FOSS desktop environments for BSD. In addition, there are a lot of window managers that look & feel more or less bubbly. AfterStep, Blackbox, ctwm, Enlightenment, fvwm, Sawfish, twm and Window Maker, to name a few.
