Where the left will be quick to mention that the US installed major corporations in Iraq to assure a stong American business presence with or without a military presence, but look over the fact that France and Germany have engaged in commerce with Iraq for years despite UN sanctions, the right will do just the opposite. It is rare that you will find unbiased reporting anywhere these days.

There is substantial evidence that there is a liberal media bias in this country. There is equal evidence to suggest a conservative bias.

Rumor sites BAD? Hell...as if Mac users (myself included) weren't fanatical enough already, Rumor sites provide the mosed obsessed Mac nuts a place to feel right at home...They're the closest thing to a case mod community Apple's got (except, of course, for the Apple case mod community)

But seriously...Apple rumor sites are all in good fun...they give you that little thrill that you know something Mr. Jobs doesn't want you to know. And seldom does harm come from a rumor site (yes, there have been exceptions in the past, but I mean on the whole). And who is to say that the crazy ideas brought up in the bizarre and frightening rumor forums don't give Apple clues as to the direction customers want them to go? Or clues as to how to go about marketing their products?

I don't think they're a bad thing at all...no worse than sites claiming to have the latest screenshots from "Windows Longhorn XXP 2006 super confidential unix-powered beta."

People, It's really rather offensive to see so many people using their moderation points to stifle the views of so many people. This is abuse of the system. The Mod point system is there so that relevant and helpful comments are given the most prominence.

As soon as you start using them to mod opinions different from yours into oblivion, you're effectively destroying someone's right to free speech. Yes, Free speech is about the right to express your own opinion, but in doing so, you must also respect the opinions of others. You certainly don't have to agree, but dumping 5 mod points on someone just becuase they said "Bush is Awesome" or alternatively "War Sucks" is just childish. If you agree with a comment, by all means, give it a few points.

Don't mod someone down just because you disagree. Mod someone down for saying "In Mother russia, IRAQ attacks YOU!"

Oy...be prepared to take a knife to it.

The little white (assuming you have the white pro mouse) skirt around the bottom is the only real challenge. You'll have to get an exacto knife uner the skirt, and work all he way around it untill it comes off with marginal force. I had a crappy old black one to practice on, and i broke the skirt...you have to be really gentle, but firm. And watch out for the USB cable with the razor: i cut right through the white one, and had to replace it with the silver one from the black mouse (which looks cooler anyway). Once the skirt is off, it's pretty straightforward. Clean off any residual glue around the bottom of the clear plastic chell, and the white inner shell should just lift off. Then pop the bottom of the mouse out of the white shell, remove the protector over the LED, De-solder it, drop the white one in (I used a basic Radioshack one, and it works great) and reassemble everything. You'll have to glue the white skirt back on (I just used gel superglue) carfully, using *just enough* glue.

Make sure you test your LED and your USB _BEFORE_ you reassemble, since there's gluing involved here.

I'm very, very satisfied with this mod...If I owned a digital camera i'd get some pictures up (that would help explain things...). And I'm looking forward to the next one, with the body of the Black mouse.

    Hope that all helps!

I spent wednesday afternoon modding mice. I put a blue LED in my cheap ass logitech. I log onto slashdot today, and what do I see?

In any case, I also took my beautiful white Apple Pro mouse and stuck a white LED in it, so that the mouse has a faint glow in a dark room, and the gorgeous white LED beauty from the bottom. Those mice, however, were NOT meant to be disassembled. Much cursing and yelling and glueing involved.

The next project, which ought to make the /. Mac Naysayers happy: the TWO-BUTTON Apple Pro mouse...oh...it will be a sight to see indeed...

So I assume that none of the $10-30 K a year in tuition that students pay is going towards internet access?

A university is a business just like any other. It has employees and provides sevices (and goods: food, textbooks, board, etc.) to those willing to pay. Internet access is just another one of those services. I know on my tuition bill there's a very clear "$135: internet access."

So what makes a University any different from an ISP?

Also: I'd love to see where you got the statistic that "99% of the information that is downloaded to universities from p2p is illegal in either copyright law or university rules."

That seems like an absurdly high number. At least in my circle of friends, p2p is frequently used for trading GPL software, and programs that students have written themselves. I'm not going to pretend I've never DLed a movie or some Mp3s, but God knows that's not 99% of my p2p usage.

And it's quite simple to limit bandwidth usage for p2p programs. My university has done so, and it's quite evident that download speeds are affected. It takes several days sometimes to download a Debian ISO, but streaming web content screams at blazing speeds...It's pretty clear that the university is discouraging p2p use, and doing so without harming more "legal" or "ethical" uses of the iternet. As far as I know, many ISPs do the same thing...it sounds like these letters are directed at the schools that have not implemented such limitations. I wouldn't be surprised to see similar suggestions made by the industry to ISPs. I don't see anything at all immoral or amoral about saying "hey...some of your customers are doing illegal things...You should discorage that" to an ISP, or to a University.
