No, the chipset can address full 4 GB technically speaking, though not all of may be available to the OS, it really depends on hardware design. The limitation probably has to do with physical limitations, 2 GB SODIMMs being longer than 1 GB usually -- maybe there's enough place only for one?

The 15" Core 1 Duo MBP has 2 tweeters and 1 mid-range central speaker and the sound is pretty decent for a laptop. From the technical overview docs on Apple website I would imply that the 17" model has 4 tweeters, but I'm not 100% sure. It's probably the same for the new models.

The patch is not a real fix. Any signal will do, though it presumably needs to be called from kernel space (take SIGSEGV, works fine here).

You consider this to be a pro? Well, I guess the X-Box modding business has done it, and people consider such things as quite normal...

My point is that with all the other commercially available smartphones you dont't have to unlock them for custom software to work. You can well start off by writing your own software (particularly Nokia, with good SDK support comes to my mind) and running it on your phone with no concerns of voiding the warranty or having to modify the phone in any way.

Why do you think the US has what is generally regarded to be one of the worst health care systems in the first world, and the most expensive drugs? Why do you think senior citizens have to smuggle drugs across the border because they cannot afford them themselves? Answer: because health care in most all EU nations and Canada and Australia are publicly funded, and have massive publically funded drug research programs, because they try to look after the people, whereas the US is just interested in making a quick buck.

No, it isn't because EU nations public funded research programs, and look after people that US citizens cannot afford drugs. This is nonsense.

Besides, do wake up! What world are you living in? Have you actually seen, or experienced those health care systems you are talking about? I don't know about the US one, but certainly, health care systems in most European countries do suck.

Provided, of course, you do want to learn :P

  8. Re:How much power do chips consume, exactly? on AMD Releases 12 New Chips at CeBIT · · Score: 1

In idle state, the processor would make about one third of the power consumption, perhaps less with aggressive power management. It changes dramatically when it comes to full load - at full speed, my P4-M seems to take about 2/3 of the current (about 30 W).

  9. Re:I've said it before on AMD Releases 12 New Chips at CeBIT · · Score: 1
Actually, you would be able to get several Watts less consumption. P4-M consumes about 6-8 W when idling, whereas in full load it is more like 22 W for lower frequency (1.2 GHz), and something like 30 for higher. Given that, the power dissipation of 25 W for a low voltage AMD seems quite large.

Although right now AMD does a better job with its PowerNow, the overall improvement is not so significant - gaining 2 or 3 W when CPU is idle is irrelevant, if at the same time the display consumes something like 10 W.

The whole point in the Centrino technology is reducing the overall system consumption - beginning with CPU (both in performance and idle modes), through the chipset and memory / cache controller, up to the display, and that is why those machines will beat AMD's ass, at least in terms of power consumption.
