    If that twenty cents is really making a difference in your monthly budget, you have bigger problems.

    But if you want, you can just make a bootable flash drive the same way and copy the file over.

    but I've seen similarly asinine things - like a mainboard that needs Windows, IE and ActiveX to stream BIOS updates from the Internet into your chip (not kidding)

    Please tell us what that was. I need to avoid that mess for many reasons! With that kind of stupid in the updates, what is in the code?!?

    Well, I've had to use liveCD a couple of times to save data off of a Windows install before reformatting. Does that count?

    Nahh... People use Linux to remove Windows all the time.

    What's the deal with MP3sparks.com? Is it another Russian site or something? Seems like either it's not legit or it's operating in a country with different ideas about copyright.

    It is the same Russian site with a new domain name. And zookz is another interesting site.

    They can never beat free, sorry.

    Sure they can. If free takes three days to download, and $5 takes an hour, that season of Desperate Housewives might be purchased instead of "stolen."

    It is just that up to now they have had it backwards. They charge $40 a head for the soup kitchen, while the steakhouse next door is free. (There is still a long wait for a table)

    I would argue that these are not attacks but free speech (as in freedom of expression). Sure, some security sites will be down, that's just the way it is. A mDDOS attack, assuming this is going to be their method, is just like free speech but through the mouth of your NIC card. Ok it's more like yelling but all they need are good earplugs.

    Right up until you decide to have a press conference in my living room. Break into my house and you may get shot.

    Pew used the AACS membership list to generate their list of "scientists" to poll. Anyone that wants to fork over $99 can join the AACS, including kindergarten teachers. Would you call the opinion of a kindergarten teacher the opinion of a scientist? The stated goals of AACS essentially define it as a left-leaning organization, so it's no surprise that 55% say they are Democrats.

    Perhaps Pew could not do their research on such a decidedly biased sample to begin with -- but I suppose that is asking too much these days.

    Everyone is biased. You need to look behind the headlines to find out anything. I just wish CNN and Fox had a [citation needed] tag.

    And thanks for that bit of information. It does give a little perspective.

    Don't just blame malice. There will be a slight bias to the people who pay you most of the time. It may not be intentional. But if you work for "The Cap and Trade Working Group" you are more likely to support the CO2 cause of global warming, than if you work for the "Natural Gas Producers Association."

    Poppies are processed to opium which is processed to heroin. Cocaine is made from coca.

    Like you, I've always hated the "if you've ever driven even ONE MILE over the limit, that's the same as SERIAL MURDER. IT IS ILLEGAL!!1!ELEVEN!" argument.

    I always wondered why people tried that argument. Most of my friends know I speed like a mad man all the time. So if they win the argument and convince me it is true, I might just go "What the fuck." Bang!

    Or I might just ease into it with assault and pop em in the nose.

    No. You might rag on it, or get in a wreck, or pick up nasty street whores and stain my seats. Not to mention ware an tear on the engine, clutch, transmission, and tries. But I am fine with you copying my car any time.

    Houston is a swamp, not a desert. Many days it is well over 90 and raining hard. And a 5 year break even point sucks from an investment standpoint. OK for home users with an urge, but not a real business case for it yet. Hopefully it gets a lot cheaper for cells.

    Power distribution nightmares - although super conducting main lines like they're using in New York are very promising.

    There are some risks as well. http://www.hsb.com/theLocomotive/Story/FullStory/ST-FS-SOLAR.html One grid means one point of failure. Three days in Houston with no power was bad enough.

    And last but not least, where are you going to put all this power for use at night? Yeah maybe wind helps but many of the same problems crop up.

    Consider that the highest demand for power is during the day to run air conditioning, and solar for supplemental power start to make sense. Just not dollars, as it is still amazingly expensive.
