Learn to read your own web stats. Anything coming from a.com or.net or.org is considered "US". How long have you been running a web site, and you didn't know this? Not every Brittish website is.co.uk, not every Dutch website is.nl, not every German website is.de
You just need to learn how to read the statistics.
America is not the richest country in the world. Not even close to it. Maybe they are overall due to an immense population as well, but compare the average annual income of an American to that of a Western European. I don't see how anyone could have seen this as a surprise. For years and years Sweden, Holland and Germany have been (per capita) the most connected nations in the world. Percentage wise, the US has never even been close in terms of Internet connectivity. Years and years ago, before the whole "internet boom", all of my much elder aunts and uncles in Holland were already online and surfing and emailing away.
On the same topic, then...
I didn't read the article, cause I'm lazy. But does any know if they are already building this specifically with support for IPv6?
The new edition of A Brief History of Time(released two or three years ago) has added two additional chapters, including indepth discussions regarding the possibilities of time travel. Truly a marvelous book, easy to understand, yet full of knowledge. I recommend it to almost anyone I meet.
could China attack us "electronically" in such a way that could, in some ways, have the same result as an EMP? Something like that?
Actually, there is more to this story than you may think.
Last summer in the midst of the Nimda, Code Red and Sir Cam outbreaks, for the first time the concept of the internet "going down" was brought to the forefront. Traffic load on certain segments of the internet was so immense due to these self-replicated and scanning virii that certain routers already were being knocked out of commision. And these virii weren't even created with the specific intent of, "Generate as much traffic as possible."
"The Internet" being knocked virtually out of commision is actually a possiblity, if a few major backbones are taken out. The worst part? We, in all honesty, have no clue how to "reboot" the Internet if enough of it went down.

I'm sorry, but I'll have to disagree as well.

There's a difference between The Register and SlashDot? It thought the only difference was the message boards here... ;)
