  1. Is this reason why we cant spin down disks? on Replacing Atime With Relatime in the Kernel · · Score: 4, Interesting

On of my gripes with Linux is that one cannot spin down the disks to lessen their wear and tear.
Ive been told that the kernel constantly needs to access the disk...

Is this the reason of something else prevents the disks from spinning down?

  2. Is this possible? on Bush Reveals New Space Policy · · Score: 2, Interesting

Ive had this question in my mind since a loong time, but is it possible legally for any one country to claim things in space as part of their country?

For example can the US claim the Moon or Mars (in future) just because they landed their countrymen on the body, and planted some flags?
Are there any legal guidelines for this?

The creators seems to be more worried about what technology to use (wi-fi, encryption, yada, yada) than how to solve the problem.

Look at how India has already successfully used electronic voting machines across many elections - http://www.eci.gov.in/EVM/slide.asp

Before you bang on the table demanding cool animation while voting and the face of the person youre voting for - thats not the core purpose of the machine.
Adding more stuff in there makes it complex and breakable, especially people really want to break it.

  5. How is this bad? on Judging The Apple 'Sweatshop' Charge · · Score: 1

MacWorld summarizes an article published in the U.K., stating that Apple's iPods are made in China by women who work 15 hours/day, make $50/month, and have to pay half of that right back to the company for housing and food. The article also claims the workers live in dormitories where they are housed 100 per room, and are not allowed visitors.

Ok, people are still POOR in the world incase someone forgot. They can do it for cheap and thats the bottom line - and its not like they are being trapped in chains and made to work. Did anyone answer that? Maybe this is their heaven compared to other alternatives. If they are not being forced, and they want to - who are you to set their standards? I am sure they can determine whats best for them without your help.

This is a classic view of computer people where EVERYTHING has to be JUST right to go on to the next step - without 1 and 2 dont even think of 3. Agreed basic water and electricity would be a comfortable thing to have, but people are still living there and things like computers make them think a step ahead of where they should logically be. For the poor street kids it gives some hope - some accomplishment - even if it means playing minefield or using notepad! sure they would go back to their sweaty mud houses, but i bet they would line up for a better score the next day.

Those are the only two statements i spoke - and viola!
the thing which pissed me off is that the only phone number i have is my cell - and very few people have it - credit people calling me during day results in minute usage.. an absolute no-no.

predictable under-water currents could be used.

Come to think of it - these would be of no use

Basic point is that there will always be something which will ultimately be profitable by spamming.
