Books are the one format I will carry on buying regardless. I enjoy reading in places where a laptop or whatever just isnt practical. I have a PDA but I can't imagine reading an ebook on it.
If I ever found something I could only get in ebook format I might print it out to read at my leisure but I would rather buy a neatly bound copy.
This especially applies to text books. I know they are usually more expensive but I like the ease of use a good old fashioned paper book provides. I also like the neatness that having someone else do a good job of binding it provides.
They don't call it a gas giant for nothing. The surface is less dense than water. You might be suprised by the distance you would sink into the surface.
So does that mean I would need wellington boots as well?
Ok, I've worked with both for years and know it's a viable replacement, at least for Word and Excel.
For most things I use word or excel for it would be, but it loads slower. Alot slower.
I use office 2000 at work. I tried installing open office to see if I could use that instead but removed it because it took too long to open. I know I could use whatever feature it is to keep it running, but it still wasn't as quick as loading the MS variety. Even on my fairly nippy laptop I am using now I know MS Office loads a lot quicker.
If someone could sort that out I would use it any day as most of offices features I simply don't need as a web developer.
Then there is the joy of browser compatiblility. You start out saying, oh, we will only support browser X...but it never sticks...and your regression testing grows geometrically with each browser and version of browser you support.
Nah, it pains me to say but most of the time that is a load of rubbish. You just make sure your app works in IE6 and that covers it.
I would love to develop more cross browser stuff, but I am never allowed to spend too much time on it. I also work on projects as a part of a team so no matter how much time I spend making my bits work in any browser one of the other devs doesnt do this and then chances are the whole app wont work.
Management never care as the customers never complain they cant access the app in firefox, opera or whatever. Our app is aimed at corporate customers and they are all on IE6. I look forward to the day we get asked for firefox compatibility because I will come out of it smelling of roses but I am not going to hold my breath.
I have just skirted over Essjay's page and notice it has been locked to prevent people editing it. It should have simply been removed. If my employers found out I had made up qualifications on my CV I would be escorted out of the building immediately and they would probably make sure it ended my career. Why should he be any different?
There should have been no attempt to ask him to step down as this is a waste of time and just shows that the people in charge of wikipedia do not have what is needed to manage a team of people. I know that this can be a hard decision to have to make but sometimes you really do have no choice.
Unless Mr Wales always knew he was being dishonest about his qualifications which makes him complicit and maybe he should step down too.
I have often posted links to wikipedia as I did trust it as a source of accurate information. I will try and find a better source in future. It is a shame but Mr Wales has made clear with this debacle he is not competant to hold the position he does. He came up with a nice idea, but he has now well and truly fumbled the ball. Hopefully someone else will pick it up and run with it as the concept was good.
.... why the fuck did the United States not complete its prosecution of Microsoft and prevent these illegal business practices.
Because the US population elected the republicans, the friends of business and corruption. They could hardly go on prosecuting a company for a few minor attempts at making too much profit when they were about start a religous crusade so the oil companies (owned by the president and his chums) could do the same thing.
Go on moderate this as a troll, but it is not. There are a great deal of people in the rest of the world who are becoming shit scared of the US and its vast military and I am one of them.
As a Brit who had liked the fact that windows updated my clock between British Summer Time and Greenwich Mean Time for years could someone explain why this is suddenly an issue for anyone?
Has someone in some part of the world just realised that it gets dark earlier in the winter?
Under british law only a court may impose a fine, not a TV license inspector, not a police officer, not Tony Blair, no-one except a court may impose a fine. That dates back to 1689 and is still part of the law today (see the bit about "freedom from fines and forfeitures without trial").
I know this. That is why the sentence after the one you quoted talked about when you arrive in court you had to fill out an asset disclosure form. If you had quoted both sentences together (ie - in context) point 1 or your post would seem a little strange.
Not sure why you mention the second point but an interesting piece of info none the less. Now I am off to watch several episodes of Stargate Atlantis I just downloaded.
you shouldn't be using your mirrors for backing up unless you're driving something 25ft long and have a CDL and so forth
I was just discussing this with a friend who is a professional driver. He was saying he uses his mirrors for reversing quite a lot since he used to drive a delivery van and so has just got in the habit of doing this.
...now it's time to put half a paycheck where my mouth is:-/
Likewise. I now write software for a living so see that not paying for it is actually ripping people like myself off. It probably helps that the company I work for offer a profit sharing scheme so anyone ripping off my company directly costs me money.
Not to worry, when the Conservative government get in at the next election they will end the current system. They have promised Rupert Murdock they will do this some time ago.
On your point of them being a RIAA type organisation I think you are taking this a bit far. They are actually pretty fair. The reason they let you off being a student for instance is that they know that in all probability your parents have a TV licence and you can claim that is your primary residence. They have access to the register of voters (electoral role) and can use this see if anyone at that address is registered to vote.
The poster below makes a valid point regarding new TV purchases though, but this also extends to your TV card. Now all retailers who sell any equiptment capable of picking up a TV signal are required to get your details and hand them on to the TV licence people. If you refuse to provide them they are legally obliged to refuse to sell you what you want. If you buy on any sort of card they dont ask, they just get the details via your bank.
They also do have the ability to pick up the RF signal that cathode ray tubes generate, and then decode an image (Van Eck Phreaking - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Eck_phreaking). Thus if a TV license inspector arrives at your door and you are watching TV they usually know what channel you are watching.
They do not however have any rights of entry to your property, so can be told to sod off and come back with the police and a search warrant. I am not aware of any incidences where they have come back with the police, but I expect in the worst cases where they can proove that the person does have the money for a TV licence but simply chooses not to buy one they probably do.
You point about them only fining poor people is a bit harsh. You imply that people who are poor do not know they have the right to refuse entry to their home. This is complete rubbish, I have lived on a council estate for years and believe me, most residents knew exactly what the score was in this regard.
It is also worth noting that under british law they are unable to fine you more money than you can afford to pay, so the several thousand pounds bit is crap too. When you arrive in court you have to fill out a form detailing your assets. The only way you can be fined more than you can afford is if you refuse to disclose your assets or if you fail to turn up in court, neither of which are a particularly good idea as the british legal system takes a very dim view of this.
Please don't ask fucking stupid questions that those of us who have to deal with this crap on a daily basis don't want to know the answer to.
Every piece of spam or malicious software that makes it into my company finds its way to my inbox attached to the question "Why did I get this?", so I really don't want to know how worse it can get.
The math has to be done either on the user's end (which would be bad for folks with low spec systems, who i see as the primary target for this business model) or on Adobe's systems (which will cost them money, decreasing their bottom line).
Not really, processing power is cheap. Bandwidth is alot cheaper than it used to be now as well.
I have used photoshop a bit so I can offer some advice as to why people would use it too, the next version of photoshop may not run unless you have a legal copy and as many people have already said, there are alot of things photoshop does that Graphic Designers need and isnt offered by the likes of Gimp (cant speak for picassa as I thought it was just a photo sharing service). If a Graphic Designer was prevented from taking a work copy of Photoshop home (currently the norm) and installing it on their home PC this web based product would get used more than you think.
It would be very easy to prevent users from taking work copies of software home too. You simply use some sort of activation service like Microsofts Genuine Advantage. Like it or not this is going to become the norm on most high end business software over the few years. It fits in well with the software as a service pricing model that more and more companies are implementing.
You pay your money and are given free updates and support for a specified period, after that the software will disable (but even if it doesn't most businesses would not like running software they depend on with no support options if it goes wrong). I understand this will be unpopular here as alot of people will be running at least a little bit of pirated software. I once added up all the pirated software I used to enable me to work from home and it came to about double the value of the PC it runs on.
This sort of web service will enable us to continue to use the software we are used to in the office without having to buy an additional copy for home use (when the licensed version of software prevents this).
Alternatively, move to a country that actually believes in freedom and doesn't have such stupid booze laws.
I have always found it ridiculous that in the US you are considered mature enough at 18 to vote or die in some stupid war or another but you have to wait three more years for a beer. I suppose this is an improvement from when it was banned outright but still.

(unless you consider suicide bombers a discovery)
Actually even this is against the teachings of Islam. At no point in the Koran does it say killing non-believers is acceptable. The Quran has pretty much that same take on killing as Christianity and Judaism - Thou Shalt not kill.
Actually the Quran apparently makes an exception in the case of justice but it is limited to the heir of someone murdered taking revenge.
So suicide bombing and indescriminatly killing streets full of people seems a bit beyond this. But then again the bible commands us not to kill, without any such exemption yet a great many christian countries (Or states) still have the death penalty. I think this just does to show that we will always twist religion to our own ends, picking and choosing the bits we want to follow and this bits we don't.
And let us not forget that the Catholic church invented the inquisition.
Personally I was brought up to be a Quaker but I would have a hard time following any religion, so instead I do my best to treat others as I would like to be treated myself.
Interestingly enough Granada (city in southern spain ruled by the Arabs for years) has the best remaining examples of Arabic architecture in existance. The most beautiful example of which is the Alhambra, here are some links:
As to what happened to the high point of Arabic culture, thats easy, we destroyed it in The Crusades. The only reason that didnt happen to Spain was that the area was no longer under Arabic Rule. The fact is that western culture has always been better at one thing - War.

I reckon we need some sort of script that automatically mods your post down (or doesnt let you post at all would be even better) if you do not try clicking the link to the full article. I could write something that also made sure you stayed on the page for at least a nominal amount of time required to scan the article.

To the original dipshit who posted, and all the other people who have done the same, I would like to give some advice -
Do not try and take part in discussions you know nothing about (We discuss articles here). Just read (or listen) and learn, otherwise you really do just come across like a complete moron, and once you get that reputation in the real world it is the reason people stop listening to a single word you say (Or if you do it at work, you will get the chop next time your company has a round of redundancies).
In police affidavits obtained by the Citizen, the judge admitted that he authored the journal. The judge has not been charged with any crime for keeping the electronic diary, but has been charged with possession of more than 100 images of child pornography. Since that indictment, an alleged molestation victim has come forward and the judge now also faces sexual-assault charges dating back to 1976.
Another quote -
The judge, a Little League umpire, had contact with numerous boys at ball games, in a mall and at a private health club -- where he befriended vulnerable young boys with the hopes of exploiting them.
"You can't just charge in like you did with (a boy). How do I encourage him without pursuing him too hard? You have great entrÈ in the separation of his parents," says an entry dated June 6, 2000.
The next day, the author writes: "I gave a lot of thought today about this business of approaching these kids too fast... He doesn't strike me as a lonely boy like (boy) was. You have to make them come to you or it just doesn't work," says a diary entry dated June 9, 2000.
After reviewing the journal, Det. Tracy Jacobson concludes in an affidavit that the author is a pedophile. "He refers to the child as 'gorgeous' and writes about how and when to approach the child, and plans his moves carefully. It is further my opinion these are the type of comments only a pedophile or a child molester would make," Det. Jacobson said.
