You should check out this shareware app. Allows you to set up up to 4 buttons on the pad (plus the built-in). Also let's you ad scrolling (top/bottom and sides). It's called SideTrack. You can get it here.

I'm not sure that there is anything legally related to this, but Apple repairs are covered for 90 days after the initial repair, within the initial warranty or not. I know this for a fact. I am a certified Apple repair technician (desktop and portables). My 9-5 is filled with fixing broken and defective Apple computers. In my experience Apple is very aware of how customer service is crucial to thier business. They rutinely cover repairs in our shop that are out of or not covered by warranty under what is called a CS (Customer Satisfaction) Code. The sad fact is that the majority of the computers that I see are out of order due to abuse (dropping, liquid spill, general clumsiness, etc.). This is expressly not covered by apple's warranty, limited or extended. Still people expect Apple to fix thier machines no matter the scope of the damage at no cost to them. Historically speaking (in my experience), Apple has been much more forgiving than I would ever expect. I've even seen a number of machines replaced to satisfy unhappy customers. Now, having said all of this, like many /. readers, I don't know how relevant my post is, as I haven't read the article yet. I may have to eat my words in a few minutes when I go back to read the articles.

  4. NetBoot Possible From OS 9 on Massively Updating to Mac OS X? · · Score: 5, Informative

NetBoot is possible from OS 9. I run an Xserve (with 10.2 server) and have been able to do it since I got the server. If you read through the NetBoot portion of the OS X Server Admin Guide (found here: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n120174). You should see that you need a specific (newer) version of the Startup Disk control panel. I believe they say that it comes on the server software CDs, but I got it from the latest OS 9 system software of a G4 tower. I would guess that you need to be running OS 9.2.2, but I'm not positive. Most of my troubleshooting CDs are still booting OS 9 and I needed to be able to reboot from them to a server image. It's worked well for me, so far.

I just had to chime in on this one. We had a PC sales rep (either Compaq or Dell, I can't remember) stop in at the University IT Department I work at. We are on a three year replacement cycle for the roughly three thousand machines on campus (only about five hundred Macs right now, the rest are Dells). He happened to be listing off some figures to a fellow employee. His statistics listed the useable lifespan of the average PC at 2.1 years whereas the average useable life of a Mac was 3.8 years. I'm not sure what these averages were based on, but I thought this crowd might find it interesting.

First, I know this is off-topic, so, feel free to mod me down. Check out the operating environment temperature of your iMac. It is convection cooled so any problems you are having might be caused by your ignorance of the proper operating environment. I too have replaced several PAV (Power Analog Video) boards as a repair tech for a decent sized university. Most from abuse and others from people who operated thier computers outside of the recomended environment (above or below recommended temps. or humidity). Check out the specifications on your machine either in the manual or here.
