I'm unsure of whether you are suggesting contributing whole products or simply useful widgets. Obviously if your company makes and sells software then contributing entire tools would ultimately cost your company money.

OTOH, If you are suggesting contributing or modifying useful widgets(sort routine, object loader, file input output routines) then the terms of your contract have bearing. Many employers claim ownership of everything you think while on company time. Obviously the company doesn't want to get trapped into giving away items that cost it money. IOW, you asked a very vague question.

Most companies are still very wary of a support only model and will need to have it sold effectively. So be prepared to sell the advantages of selling support to selling "solutions".

For content, or behaviour?? IANAL, but ISTR that as a common carrier, ISPs are not responsible for the content they convey unless there is a complaint. Just like the phone company doesn't care if you receive obscene phone calls unless you complain.. So if you wish to receive obscene phone calls you have that right, but you also have the right not to, and if you wish not too, you must notify the person making them, and then the phone company.

You mentioned Infoworld as an alleged exception. I just subscribed to infoworld and had to go through 10 pages of survey, and send it in to find out if I was eligible to subscribe. Definitely not free. 20 minutes of my time+my demographic information is worth rather more than $16 which is what a annual subscription to time or newsweek would cost. You claim I'm wrong, but you haven't come up with any examples. Further, you have elected to not post logged in, which suggests that you are a nothing more than an articulate troll.

It isn't some areas. And yes, if one station offers full serve self serve side by side, they charge a premium. But that doesn't necessarily reflect anything but an opportunity cost to the consumer. OTOH, Again, in PA, I know of two full serve stations, one where the prices are a nickel less per gallon than the self serve across the street, and the other where they are full serve on weekends and during rush hour. It allows them to sell gas faster and they don't charge more for full serve(which isn't full serve like it usta be). And it doesn't have to cost that much more, especially if the station is a gas station and not some bastardized grocery store that also sells gas.
