"Yeah, citizen's revolt my ass. There's Jabber servers aplenty, but lets see anyone join that disjointed mess into something cohesive. That's the real fragmentation. Who is going to gather the resources together and risk a real assault against the big IM? Google has done it - their IM had some real word of mouth behind it at the beginning, but who's talking about it these days?
I know. I have the same problem with email. There are so many email servers. It's so frign fragmented. I refuse to use both Jabber and email until both of them fix their fragmented mess.
As it currently stands however the grandparent's comments are completely valid. Google can promise the moon. I simply wait until they take action to form opinions. Until google actually opens up s2s communication, the grandparent will be completely correct. The grandparent has summed up the facts up to this point.
"MS Messenger is the most popular IM client by a significant margin in many places throughout the world - in some places to the tune of ~ 90%."
MS Messenger is also the least popular IM client by a significant margin in many places throughout the world - in some places to the tune of 0%. One such place is my apartment right now.
complaining about a missing feature which you were never promised, in software which you haven't paid a cent for nor contributed your own effort to, is not going to get you far.
The purpose of this article was not so people could complain. The purpose of the article was to give the "Now we can pay with virtual Money" jokes a place to go.
While we're at it, it would have helped if we stored everything about our citizens in a national database. It should have your dna information. It should have the classes that you take (so that you can tell if they are in pilot school). It should have what you checked out at the library and bought at the store (to see if you are reading books about bombs). It would also help if we had microphones in suspected criminal's houses. That way they can pick up on keywords in the criminal's speech. Then if there is another bombing then the program can be expanded to everyones houses. For their protection of course.
But seriously the best solution would be to prevent terrorist attacks by having a better foreign policy. There are prevention methods that would work better without restricting rights. I'd prefer to take steps away from a police state instead of towards.
I am going to argue that this is a bad thing. An industry that is controlled mostly by the RIAA will constantly try to control your music with DRM and increased prices. Apple didn't deal the RIAA a blow here. Apple merely bought some time until the RIAA will put pressure on them again. Since alternative distribution and licensing will only come when the music is priced at the levels that the RIAA likes, I think this is a blow to better music, better licensing, and better distribution systems. I said it and I meant it. I think music should be released under the creative commons. With the itms, all music will be licensed with the most restrictive terms possible.
I'll probably get modded as a troll for not saying "apple R0X0RZ", but whatever.
Once that happens, I fully expect the majority of people will shrug and accept it and for DRM to then become commonplace.
I really hope you are wrong, but I fear that you might be right. DRM restricts my rights and removes my freedom. I cherish my rights and freedoms and will never pay someone to strip them from me. Unfortunately I fear people will shrug DRM off as a necessary evil. I will never support a company financially or otherwise if they push for the use of DRM.
The consequences of this fact and your above stated opinion are that the only faultless way of making money in a band is to self-publish. Signing to a privately-held company is not an option because although they aren't legally obliged to put profit before anything else, you have no guarantee that they won't do it anyway.
You don't have to self publish, but yes your statement generally summarizes my thoughts. I bought music off of http://magnatune.com/ 2 days ago. This was the first music I've bought in at least 2 years. I was able to download my music in FLAC, OGG and MP3 formats. I paid $5 and $2.50 went to the band which is more than if I bought a CD from Sony and the band got less than a dollar. You could roll your own distribution site, or go with other distribution methods such as those linked on the left of this page: http://creativecommons.org/audio/
or you could sign with a major record label and I will post about how that is a bad idea and get modded as a troll. Switchfoot chose the last one.
This is a bald statement with no supporting argument or evidence
Considering that you have a 3 digit slashdot number I won't post my original thought ("you're new to slashdot aren't you"). Instead I'll post "you should be used to comments like these by now."
I blame switchfoot. They should have known that Sony would not be looking out for the band or the fans. Sony's only care is turning a profit. Restricting rights is all part of the deal when signing a major record label. The fans are stupid too for financially supporting companies that restrict their rights. I do not blame sony at all. Sony is in the business of being a massive turd to both artists and fans. They did their job. If switchfoot or it's fans don't want to be associated with turds then switchfoot shouldn't have signed up with a company that is in the business of being a turd.
You have got to be kidding. There is no way that Intel would tell dell to take it's threats elsewhere now that it has Apple on board. Apple cannot replace the volume of chips that Intel would lose if Dell switched to AMD.
Considering that Sun contributes more to open source than apple, you'd think that there would be a bigger group of Sun fanboys than apple fanboys. I don't think dell contributes anything to the open source community. Based on this I hope that Sun does well, Apple does ok, and dell does badly.
When someone swears in an argument it usually means that the other person has such a good point that the arguer cannot construct a valid and decent point. They must instead fall back on variations of 4 letter words. I find it funny that the grandparent swore first, but the parent, determined to lose the argument more, followed that one up with more swearing. Brilliant.
So true. I was going to look up specs and compare servers until I realized that I would be falling for the marketing trap. I refuse to care until I have to buy one (which hopefully won't be for another few years).
My horse is quite comfy thank you very much. What's it like under the bridge?
I refuse to get on the "but he does some good" bandwagon here.

Your links and colors didn't work.

I could care less if he fell down those stairs.
Can you quote your source for those numbers please.
That's putting it lightly.

I'm gonna hold out till they have a 2 for 1 sale. I'm a bargain hunter to the end which includes bargain quarks and bessel functions.
Expect to see this device available around the time duke nukem forever comes out.
Better oohs and aahs at product announcements.

The original post was probably thinking of the US circa 1900. Copyright was only 14 years then and things actually entered the public domain.

I think everyone should watch this:

Then that protective coating of duct tape over your mp3 player will add the needed longevity that you are looking for.
