  1. Huh? on Kaleidescape CEO Speaks Out About CSS Lawsuit · · Score: 1

The CEO states: "we've heard customers tell us they had stopped buying DVDs for about two years because they had no place to store them".

Not being rich, I don't know, but are these guys buying the same DVD's I get from Wal-Mart?

I have around 300 DVD's and they take up 1/2 of a 7ft. tall bookshelf.

I would assume rich people would have a huge house and therefore not have to worry about the few cubic feet of storage space even a 1000 dvd's take up. (time for me to think of useless things to sell to dumb rich people).

  3. BullShit on Build Your Own Flying Lawn Mower · · Score: -1, Flamebait

The thing leapt off the ground after hitting a stump and the rotation of the blades created enough lift to set it into flight. Get a book on basic physics, then explain again how the blades created enough lift to set anytype of working lawnmower airborne. Not everyone is completely stupid - time to makeup another story. P.S. I don't even believe you have a niece!

  4. Classic RC Funfly plane on Build Your Own Flying Lawn Mower · · Score: 2, Informative

The flying lawnmower's been a staple design in the the "fun fly" catagory of RC (radio control)for years. Always a head turner for those not into RC. Since they tend to fly like a brick outhouse, this one was either very well designed or flown by a really good RC pilot (or both). Nice video too.

  5. Bad Science on Warm Offices Boost Productivity · · Score: 1

The report is based on a very biased experiment. 9 cubicles were monitored for a short period of time (1 month) in 1 building in one physical location (florida). Not exactly a sample group that represents ALL workers. I would think that people live/work in florida because they like it warm. Monitor 10,000 cubicles in 1000 buildings across all temperate zones for 12 months and cross reference the internal temp with the external temp then write up what temp's are better for productivity.

  6. Re:Cheaper Macs on The Ultimate MacDate · · Score: 1

I really wanted to become one of the "Mac Fan Club" guys. Bought a 12" powerbook (768M OS 10.3) and jumped in full time (only used the Mac Laptop while on the road for over 3 months). Now it's up for sale, and my trusty Dell Latitude is my laptop of choice. To me, OS X is way way way to slow. The eye-candy interface bugged me after the first few days, and although BSD is there, it's pretty much buried under the interface (MacFreaks start your flameing at how I'm too stupid to use it properly). I dual boot a WinXP/Gentoo laptop and it works best (and very fast) for me. My advice, don't buy your Powerbook via mailorder without first going to a store and giving it a real life test drive. Remember, it's a tool, not a religion, so choose whatever works best for you.

  7. So Why do I... on Dell Recalls Millions of AC Adaptors · · Score: 1

So why do I have to read about this recall via news/tech sites? After buying my Dell Laptop, I filled out their registration card including everything but my blood type and fast food preference. Why aren't they data mining their vast amount of sales info and sending me a email if (and only if) my adapter is actually one that needs to be recalled. Way to be a "high tech" company and not be able to know what they sold and to whom.

  8. why rent when you can buy on Trouble for Tivo and NetFlix Partnership? · · Score: 2, Informative

I never understood the "netflix" philosophy. With Walmart and Hastings offering used DVD's for $5-10 and Djangos offering used DVD's online with a HUGE selection, why would anyone pay $20+ a month to "borrow" movies. Just buy them and be done with it. It's as cheap as renting, and you build up a DVD library that you actually OWN.

  9. Re:Wings on Human Powered Helicopter · · Score: 1

Nor do you know anything about physics. Do a little thought experiment, a tiny 1 gram balloon needs an increase in volume of several hundred percent to wobble upwards, so how much lift do you really think would occur if the wings were filled with helium (or even hydrogen)? To say nothing that it's a losing proposition since the weight added to make the wings gas tight would easily outweigh the amount of lift that small volume of gas would generate. Physic's rule!

  10. Less then $1000 - little labor on A Wireless Network for a 4-Story Apt. Building? · · Score: 1

WiFi is so over-hyped. Yeah, spend alot of money for SHARED bandwidth. Assuming each unit is wired for phone, HPNA will do everything you want for very little cost and labor (since you don't have to run new cable to the units or to the distributed WAPS). If you can get to the phone demark, put in a HPNA switch, your incoming bandwidth router, and you're done. If the apartment dwellers won't cough up the $40-60 for a HPNA adapter or HPNAEthernet adapter then they don't want bandwidth bad enough. Easy to manage via secure web interface. This is the solutions most small hotels/motels are going to. Unless you have a hugh incoming pipe, more then enough bandwidth via HPNA to service 12 units.

  11. Re:Big network on SmoothWall 2.0 Linux-Based Firewall Released · · Score: 1

Smoothwall (at least the free version) will not work for you with 3 web sites. Smoothwall Express 2.0 ONLY allows 1 external NIC address (they call it the "red zone"). If you're looking for free - try either NetBoz or MonoWall, both allow IP Alias to add more external IP addresses to your FW. You might consider a commerical product if it's truely mission critical. Check out GNATBOX products (www.gta.com). Great products, very secure, easy web admin, and great (but paid) support. I've used GTA stuff for 5+ years and have never looked back to PIX. For smaller businesses, I've been using NetBoz with good sucess.
