  1. Bigger Picture on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

I personally have always found that science fiction with a deep social or psychological comment appeals to me the most. Particularly I like Stranger In a Strange Land by Heinlen, and anything by Philip K. Dick. I also really enjoyed the questions posed about morals and philosophy in Trigun. Would you kill someone to save someone else's life? What gives you the right to decide which one of them has more of a right to live? Is there a way they can both survive?

  2. It's Been Done on The Apple Name Game · · Score: 1, Redundant

Actually, Apple was having the same sort of problem in the 80s. They were being sued by Apple Records, in the end they won, but had to agree to never try to enter the recording business. Later, when the first mac was released with a high quality audio in port standard the system alert sound "Sosumi" was added. Yes that is really how they got the name for that alert sound :)

  3. PKD on In-Depth Sims Online Development Story · · Score: 1

This reminds me strangely of the PKD novel The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Specifically the sims being much like perky pat and her world. If only there was some Cand-E for us to live in our sims world :)

  4. Smarter Spammers on Spam Archive opening FTP service December 4 · · Score: 3, Interesting

Of course a blacklist like this will be better than an algorithm for the one reason that if everyone has access to this algorithm to filter their mail, then spammers could possibly just keep sending an e-mail to themself and having it be filtered by all of the different filter algorithms and changing it a bit each time until he/she has custom-tailored that spam to get through all of the filters

  5. New beta too, plus obligatory reference on Linux Kernel 2.4.20 Released · · Score: 0, Redundant

Also, yesterday a new version of the unstable kernel was released, 2.5.50. You can download it from kernel.org (if someone has a good list of mirrors, please post, I'd prefer not to post the actual download link so we don't /. is to death) and the changelog can be viewed here. Aside from this, I assume all of those who use the currently schedule 1 substance in the US known as tetrahydrocannabinol should be able to appreciate the current version number of the stable release, 2.4.20, lol. If you mod this down for saying that, then I'm very dissapointed in you and your narrowminded cultural views.

  6. Speculation on Magnetic Poles May Be About To Flip · · Score: 1

Ugh, I keep reading posts of people complaining about how we will all die because the magnetosphere will completely disappear. This seems to be a misinterpretation. The earth will just have no definitive poles. Besides, if the earth did completely lose it's magnetosphere whenever this happened, the last time it happened would have completely stripped away all atmosphere and life on the planet, which didn't seem to happen...

  7. ANOTHER one on 3D LCD Display · · Score: 1

*sigh* We all know it's just another technology that will be used mainly for porn.

  8. Re:Engineers Aren't Going Anywhere on Engineer in a Box? · · Score: 1

You seem to be forgetting my favorite part about this. People that retain the skills of the old engineers are looked on as gods. I'm very good at quick calculations and accurate estimation. Sure, anyone can use a calculator, but people are always so impressed when they whip out their calculators to do solve some very dificult problem, and I already give them an answer, hehe.

  9. True innovation on Engineer in a Box? · · Score: 1

This product seems very feasible and a great idea in fact. You enter in specifications, and it'll make it work. But the real engineer will still have a place, all of the true innovations, thinking outside of the box, using unconventional methods, etc. These are things that this kind of software would be very lacking in. Besides, with no engineers, what about software engineers? Write down a program's specs and have it written for you? Then who would write the engineer in a box program ;) ?

Lovely, your technical prowess amazes me with your amazingly witty and well thought out remark, you have an amazing ability stick to the topic of discussion and do your research. You must be some kind of l33t h4x0r :)
