The test is not "real world" enough, it only talks about graphical performance, 2D, 3D programs and games.

    OK, acknowledged.

At the same time this is exactly the type of test *some* people have been waiting for. The other type of tests ("scientific" cough cough, "fair", "real world", ...) have been polluting the Internet for some time now.

And now there's this little ditty of a test that is totally insignificant and at the same time totally pleasing for both camps (gaming crowd versus serious graphical apps).

    What's wrong about that?

Incidentally, the problem with trying to cook up a good comparison is partly because there is not much of an equal offering in the PC camp. By this I mean a mass produced dual 64bit desktop machine. Instead of praising this innovative move and talking about the advantages and disadvantages, there was a lot of whining in the vine of "compare this with that server or that custom processor".

Well, OK, in the sense that the unprecedented side-effect of jesus was mass religion, you also have mass adoption of OSS on the bussiness end.

But in the end, the historical Jesus preached a stricter adherance to Jewish law, and the OSS movement preaches a "contribute and enjoy" sort of attitude towards a software platform.

That's still far away from a political system that wanted to do away with ownership, religion and kings by introducing a far fetched system of re-distribution (to put it simply). And just like the misunderstood Jesus, OSS is taken on a ride here.

Disclaimer: I'm also speaking about theoritecal communism here. No need to go over the whole Russia isn't communism debate again.

A rumor does not a truth make. But OTOH I'm savoring all the scepticism and mention of Apple Tax here. If the rumors and the prices quoted are true, I'm not going to stop gloating.

After all, the rumors could be true, It wouldn't surprise me. Why?

    1) They are determined to make this iTunes thing work. The iPod is a huge factor in this. Up until now they've catered for the fashion conscious and music freaks. In order to really corner the market, they now have to go for 'the rest of us'. For the first time they have the opportunity to make a cheap mass produced thingy that still has Apple appeal and quality. You think they let this one pass by?

    2) There've been tech reviews of smaller drives, ram and whatnot. Since the original iPods were made with the best and the latest, why not now? With the sales experience they have now, they know they can't go wrong if the price is right. And some of the stuff that goes in those white thingies must have gotten cheaper, no?

    3) If all's said: what's so surprising in Apple attacking a large niche market with competitive prices? Some of their professional software is dirt cheap (in its class) and some of those packets are best of breed. That's exactly what the iPod was: competitive (in its class) and best of breed. Some of Apple's computers are very competitively priced. Look at their laptop offering, the emacs and the dual 1.8 Gig G5. In their class they kick ass and you can't go much cheaper without either sacrificing in features and quality or investing time and effort in building your own - without the usual warranties...

In short: while this is a rumor, it's not so far out if you look objectively at Apple in general and their iTunes/iPod story specifically.

    Rant over :-)

    - cover artist
    - producers
    - printers
    distribution:
    - clear all copyright issues
    - promote for shelf-space
    - get interviews, reviews, airspace

And I'm forgetting quite a bit here. I'm not talking about over the top marketing campaigns, not even video, this is based upon experience with tiny little releases of about 2000 CD's.

Now all this takes a lot of time, people, organisation, goodwill. The total cost can be between 2000 Euro and 8000 Euro, depending on who you actually have to pay, how fancy your shiny disk and package looks and how much studio time you've taken up.

The catch is: all those people involved actually consume liquids and solids. They breathe air and occasionally have to go to the dentist.

Note how many people need to get paid apart from the musicians. Also note that the fact that you *could* get filthy rich by chance and good craftmanship is the reason musicians are prepared to do two-three jobs and pay off all those helpful souls - or sign into contracts with big labels who then pick up the cheque...

Also note that when we talk about concerts, there are even more people involved. While you *can* make a living touring the modest festivals, it's only the happy few who make a lot. And there's a whole musical universe out there that doesn't really translate well to live work or large podia.

While I don't sympathise with the large labels and distributors - the price of CD's is ridiculous still - I don't think the industry is totally crazy. It involves a lot of clever and honest people who work really really hard. And I really don't think labels are going to go away. Not as long as there is organising and planning involved.

What you'll see is even more specialized organizations, like e.g. CD Baby who now collect indie artists for digital distribution contracts.
