  1. This doesn't kill free software on Microsoft To License SCO's Unix Code · · Score: 4, Insightful

Microsoft has a long way to go on this before it can kill free software. If it does nip the Linux "threat" in the bud then we move to FreeBSD instead. Repeat until that $30Bn or so has been wasted on Lawyers fees and finally in 2030 we will have a MS free world! In fact I'd advise you all to go to Law School right now as there is going to be plenty of work for you when you finish up!

  2. IBM vs Lyons on A Computer Called LEO · · Score: 5, Interesting

Lyons being a food company apparently had many bad run ins with the UK government over rationing in WWII. This meant that hardly any computers were bought by the UK govt (apart from those purchased by the post office). By contrast IBM had a great relationship with the US govt before it got into digital/electronic computing (i.e back in the days of mechnical computing) and this fed through into a lot of demand for IBMs electronic computing offerings. Sad to say, another example of the UK govt managing to kill innovation stone dead and sabotage the economy. Willing to bet the dumb civil servant even managed a knighthood for his efforts.

  3. Re:$7000 per European country.. on Creating A Global Patent System · · Score: 1

Whilst there is a European patent office companies often put a patent application in with each of the individual patent offices. They do this because if you put it in with the euro patent office and it is rejected - then it will be rejected all over Europe, however if you put it in to the UK office and it gets rejected you still have a chance in Germany or France.

  4. Re:Whole other idea on Creating A Global Patent System · · Score: 3, Informative

You fool. The idea behind patents is that it gives the inventor a time limited monopoly thus encouraging technological innovation. No patents means that we start to compete on who has most financial/marketing/political muscle - i.e. large firms win every time. Patents and copy right allow small firms to have a chance against larger companies and actually spur on technological development.

  6. Economy on Sun Sued Over H1-B Workers · · Score: 1

I can't help thinking that companies might be shooting themselves in the foot here. If you fire your workforce and move all the jobs to India then who is going to buy your products in the US? Presumably you'll have such trouble selling your stuff you'll need to cut costs even more and move everything to China!
It has been going this way for years and I wonder how long it will be before we have an economic collapse that will make todays woes look like a tea party.

  8. Expensive on Sony Ericsson P800 Reviewed (Again) · · Score: 5, Insightful

The p800 is pretty expensive here in the UK. I had a look the other week and it was about £280. I am with Orange and despite spending about $45/£30 a month on my phone they won't give me any discount on it at all. The phone companies need to wise up and discount these new handsets, otherwise people like me are going to stick to normal phone calls and texts and the phone companies won't be able to make any money from picture messages or data calls and those hugely expensive 3G licenses will have gone to waste!

  10. Retirement? on Lifetime Careers in IT? · · Score: 2, Informative

It should be noted that retirement is actually only a relatively recent idea. Chancellor Bismark introduced old age pensions at the age of 65 about 100 years ago. Why 65? Because he looked at the numbers and found that only about 10% of Germans would actually live to that age.
