I have some of those old monorail pieces (I had no idea they were valuable - should probably did them out), and I doubt that you could 3D print them at the moment. The key part of the centre rail is that it's toothed, with the train itself being driven by a vertically mounted motor in the centre power unit, engaging the fine-toothed track with a metal cog.

I just don't think that a 3D printer can produce the level of accuracy needed for that sort of track with enough strength to withstand the metal traction cog.

Not everyone has the talent or desire for college, and I think we as a society ought to recognize that. Of course, that means less income for colleges and bankers providing student loans, so I'm not surprised that this is being billed as a radical idea.

One of the worst things that happened to the UK back in the day was the stigmatisation of "trades" and the new idea that to be worth anything you had to get a degree. This had a twofold effect - a lack of people who saw a skilled trade job as a viable option, and a devaluation of the degree as everyone scrambled to offer one that would be suitable for all levels of academic achievement.

It's something we're still suffering from, and we need to get away from this idea that everyone can have every opportunity if they want - some people are not cut out for academia, and there is nothing wrong with that, but they might make an extraordinary skilled tradesman. Until we re-level that playing field and take the stigma away from jobs where you get your hands dirty, we'll be stuck with the fallout.

If you're charged for SMS messages rather than having a monthly allotment, services like iOS Messages/WhatsApp/BBM really help since they use your data allowance rather than being specific things the telco can bill you for.

For me, iOS Messages allows me to send text messages, pictures, videos etc to my friends in the USA (I;m in the UK) for free - all it is is data, which I have a ton of (infinite if I'm on wifi), whereas my carrier charges 10-25p for international SMS and picture messages.

RIM's BBM service is like that but previously was exclusively for blackberry devices (as iMessage is for iOS), with WhatsApp being cross platform. Going cross platform with BBM is RIM's attempt to keep blackberry marketshare, since people are really starting to cotton on to these sorts of messaging services as an easy way to avoid massive carrier charges for sending pictures and SMS messages. Their only real downside is that they tended to be OS-specific.

I'm a cheap ass for buying something offered in a sale by those same developers.

That you think $60 for a game is the "real" price is also amusing. If the indie market has taught us anything it's that you don't need the crippling anchor of a AAA publisher dragging you down into a position where you have to release and sell a mediocre game that has somehow "failed" because it "only" sold 5 million copies.

If a developer doesn't want us to "subsidise" the console gamers, then they have no obligation to do so - there are games on steam that don't go on sale, or only get modest discounts. The low price fire sales are the equivalent of the used games market on the consoles.

Do you call your buddies who buy used games "cheap asses" who you are "subsidising" too? I assume you're not so hypocritical to have never bought a used game in your life, right? Right?

As I said, that doesn't help if almost nobody thinks to buy the dongle or to buy a wired controller. It's not whether they work as much as how many people are willing to buy a $40 controller to play a $5 game.

You can install more than one game on a PC.

The gamepad also keeps working if you use it with more than one game.

It's a little strange that you think the cost of a gamepad in relation to the games is something I PC gamer would think twice about. This is a market where a mid range GPU can cost more than an entire console, and gamers don't think twice about dropping that sort of money on hardware to play games that cost them peanuts to buy in Steam sales.

If you're a fan of using a controller, the PC supports it in a wide range of games (especially those that also have console versions - hell, the stock Skyrim UI is identical on the console and the PC version, and the game works just fine with a controller).

I can purchase a PS3 game in a store and sell it the next day at gamestop. I purchase a PC game and there is a code in the box
that ties the game to an account. All kinds of wierd DRM has been packaged with PC games. Everything from always online to rootkits.

But on the other side of that coin, that game I bought on Steam cost me anywhere from $5 to $30 depending on how long I'm willing to wait for a Steam sale. I don't feel like I have to recoup my money by reselling my games second hand because they cost me so little in the first place. I paid $5 for Fallout: New Vegas, and I am not feeling the pain about not being able to resell it to someone else.

I also have many games acquired through things like Humble Bundles (no DRM, but with Steam key option if you want it to make updates/downloads/game management easier) and places like GoG. I got Saints Row 3 in a Humble Bundle deal along with a bunch of other games for about $15 (I can't remember exactly what I spent, by SR3 was the bonus game at the time that you got if you paid more than the average donation which is usually about $10).

Sure, if you treat it like a console and buy a preorder (ha, Colonial Marines) for $$$$ or buy on launch day then the fact that you can't resell might bite you in the ass, especially if you don't enjoy the game, but that is one small part of the PC games market. Steam sales and alternate vendors like GoG and indie publishers really give you a ton of options. You are not stuck with a system where the games cost you $60.
