  1. Re:Finally on Lego Goes Back to the Basics: Building Blocks · · Score: 1
As a father of a 5 yr boy and 3yr girl, I have been waiting for good lego sets to come out. The 5yr is now able to put together his own stuff.
Some of the sets you are talking about are :

    Land Busters
    Air Blazers
    Sea Riders

They give directions for at least 3 different 'models', and then show pictures for more that you can create. The catalog we get shows the other models ( like for the heli, not only the bi-plane, but a jet and possibly a boat ).

But now I have to get grandpa to up into the attic and send me the huge box of lego they stored away when I was a kid.

  3. not just movies.. on Realistic Portrayals of Software Programmers? · · Score: 1

Well, lets not just talk about movies.. What about TV ? CSI:xxxxx ? they have 'computer people/techs' do all that investigation, and Law and Order ?
In sure there are more than this.. i dont watch that much TV.
Or what about that one car commercial, with the western music, and the guy taking his kids to the park, they even mention 'software developer'.
The movies tend to entertain, but it seems tv ( where most of these kids would be watching for more reality.. ) is starting to introduce technology in more real ways.

  4. What about Homelink in cars on DMCA Invoked Against Garage Door Openers · · Score: 1

Most mid to upscale cars have this Homelink feature. Three buttons on the visor or somewhere above the head, and it is the universial GDO. It can do the rolling code as well as the dip switched one as well.

When is Chamberlain going to sue them ?

By the way, I just bought a Skylink, and it 'learns' the code, even the dip switched ones. ie, i live in a 'gated community' and I had to set the second button to open the gate, so I had to change the dip switches to that code, and then follow the 'learn' method, so now one button opens the GD, and the other open the gate. This same remote can 'learn' all the others, all you need to know is the brand, and have both remotes ( now, i have not tried to capture my neighbors code.. )
I guess I will have to stock up on those remotes now

  5. OpenSource != free, and dont forget about PDAs on Shareware and Unix? · · Score: 1

dont confuse open source with free. I have used MVCSoft's CMP persistance manager ( JAVA, EJB ) and it cost $200 per seat, and you get full documentation and full source, with examples. If you do decide to do unix/linux stuff, this would be an option, or maybe pay xx and get the source.
personally, I do not think that Linux is in the home yet ( except for 'hobbyists' ). Where you might look is in the small office area or businesses that need specfic software done ( the rent a coder thingy )
Anyway I think that small PDA apps are the place to go. The palm OS is 'c' like, and the compiler is just gcc (cygwin on windows.) lots fo simple apps go for like $10 and most people have no trouble with spending that kind of money, even to just try out an app.
by the way, if you dont have a pda, plam has an emulator that you can test your apps with, and if you sign up as a developer, then you can download a rom so that you dont even have to by one.

  6. Re:Superdebuggers on How Would You Improve Today's Debugging Tools? · · Score: 1

wow that brought back memories. I used to use that debugger all the time, and what a hassle it was to get 15+ libs all loaded/aligned, but gosh, when I did all that, it was great.
we had a project that did a lot of c++ before c++ was popular ( lots of pointers to structures and functions and the structures would contain pointers to more structures and functions, a pretty dynamic system it was) and that debugger was a god send.. it really help to print out our complex data structures ( just call one of our print routines in the debugger.. )

  7. Re:Focus on Week-Long Free-Software Class for Kids? · · Score: 1

Very good advice in this post. But as far as alternative os, please remember in the next few years embeded programing and os's will be the dominate ones, for example: cellphones, PDAs, fridges, toasters, clothing.
You should introduce the different OS's there as well, PalmOS, Windows CE, Symbian, VxWorks, ect. You could even get a Compaq IPAQ and show them how CE vs Linux runs on that. Run a web-enabled cellphone, or better, if you have on of those java-enabled ones, download a java game, ect.
