Whats needed then is some single device, that sits between the power block/lead and the wall socket that can be turned on via an IR signal thus only having one device in the chain using power.
So some recent engineering grad can go and manufacture such a device and live in luxury. Personally I dont have the time or inclination to make such a thing, or more accurately have the hear to deal with the marketing/pr drones that would be involved in selilng it.
Keeping an IR receiver with power will require less than keeping most other devices on standby.
I have to say I am very lazy and always put my Mac to sleep, should really shut it down.
Thinking about my UK house, I have the following permanently sucking power,
TV Set top digital box. VCR XBOX Apple Imac HP Printer Digital Radio
I am blessed with having an old University friend who is an optometrist and so when I moved into the area where he lives I popped into to see him. I should point out that this was my first eye test in 10 years, the previous one had been part of the selection process for military flying. I had just passed that test as I had difficulty with stereoscopic vision.
Cut to last year and my mad irish friend (the optometrist) pionted out that I had almost no binocular vision due to a problem with my left eye that had gone uncorrected as a child (apparently I should have had an eye patch) and that although I didnt need glasses per se due to the nature of my work he would recomend glasses to reduce strain.
The point of all of this is that whilst I can read all the way down to the bottom of the eye chart,my own vision is almost completely one eyed which causes strain. I wouldnt have noticed this without visiting an eye professional and would have carried on increasing the strain. I now wear a very very low perscription pair of glasses which make an enourmous difference to how tired I feel at the end of a days work. The other thing I use is the mwm windowing system which allows me to change the fonts size of each window (cntrl left click) and thoughout the day the fonts increase in size as I get tired.
In the UK all VDU operators can recover the cost of a yearly eye check from their employers as a result of their work. As an IT professoional you know that you are making your eyes behave in an un-natural manner, and should take every precaution to protect them (and your livelihood). These are.
Annual Eye Exam from an optometrist (no dodgy low budget vision stores) Take regular focal breaks from the screen. Use large fonts, and sensibly contrasting colours for terms. Reduce brightness on the monitor. Dont go home and spend 6 hours watching the tube, or reading.
And no touching yourself because you'll get hairy palms and go blind:)
The requirement that brits have to provide biometric data before entry in to the US is enough to put me off.
Even though the UK is the most Big Brother state in Europe (world?) with its cctv camera's at least no one has my biometrics being held for an idefinite period of time.
You are right in that the C02 levels where much higher in the past and have even fluctuated dramatically recently. However all these natural changes in CO2 have occured over a geological time frame allowing the plant and animal species to migrate north or south as their ideal growing zone has changed.
What we do no is that we have managed to change the amount of CO2 and other gases in the atmosphere far more quickly than natual process.
In fact the only events that may cause such dramatic and swift changes are also extinction level event ie super volcanoes and space object impacts.
So there is a reason to be concerned especially when you combine the aerial pollution the destruction wild habitat and more importantly the industrial harvesting of the worlds oceans.
I eat meat drink beer and dont hug trees unless I have been at the absinthe. Nothing wrong with wanting to be able to breathe and eat tuna carpaccio in 20 years time;-).
Sounds much like Amsterdam to me. Well protected rights for all groups. 24/7 nightlife food etc. Good power from reasonably clean sources.
Oh and lots of sexy people and weed.
Not forgetting also the good bandwidth here compared to the rest of Europe. Lots of Cable and DSL. Also a company starting the Powerline based connects from the powergrid.
Small city no stress no rush.
Downside, the tax here really hurts but at least you get something for it as opposed to having it burnt up funding right terrorist groups etc.

Drink of the day:- Warp Core Breach
1/2 oz goldschlager 1/2 oz tequila 1/2oz Jack Daniels. Mix and shoot.
Civilian uses for super-cavitation have been proposed when the phenomenon was publicised, however there are some major drawbacks. The first is getting the object upto speed to form the cavitation which is over 500mph depending on size.
The amount of energy required to do this without explosive launches is horrendous. As a body increases speed the resistance increases by a square. You cant use explosive charges with human passengers as they would be killed by the g-force.
There is also the problem related to controlling direction, as any attemtp to change vector would require interaction with the surrounding see water massivley increasing drag.
The final problem relating to this is navigating underwater hazards, admittedly the direct course can be calculated but the problems can include whales and debris. When the craft is travelling at 600mph+ and with the turning circle of the moon it may be difficult to identify and move around these objects.
I cant see it ever being used for passenger carrying, maybe a high-speed cargo carrier for expensive goods, but with the immense costs involved it will be uneconomical for anything except colombian exports.
As for changing the nature of modern warfare it might be a could platform for weapons of mass destruction aimed at sea-facilites, with all the detection nets aimed at aerospace delivery, it is concievable the such a munition may get through unscathed.
You could use well.com services. Costs about $15 a month. Not ssh but good service shell, storage use pine client or forward to your account. Also gives you access to all the well.com forums which have quite an eclectic group of voices.
Very good IMHO.
To right about the language thing. Although Holland is probably the one place in europe where you can get away with not speaking the language as there is 75% english FLUENCY in amsterdam.
Great place to work fantastic money. Buy a house and get upto 60% up the interest paid by the government. Also some of the most fantastic looking women in the world and a cool laid back attitude to life.
Ok, enough shouting. You can implement an enterprise mail system with exchange but your not going to serve 3000+ users v well off one box. It can be done with a more distributed system.
If you want to serve more than 3000 because of the inherint lack of scalability in NT it would be best to go for a commercial unix system.. that is if you want to hold it all on one box.

Feeling a bit shamed now.
