  1. No Camera's please on World Trade Towers and Pentagon Attacked · · Score: 1

Let's not think that now it's ok to install camera's everywhere to monitor everything.

  2. X(p)-box on Gamecube: Launch Delayed, Logo Added · · Score: 1

Will the poor users of the X-box have to relicense their console each time they buy three new games? Format their memory cards, change the channel on TV?

I had been holding out for an X-box, but with the decline of my opinion about Microsoft this year I decided to wait no more and get a PS-2. After being hit with Code-Red, a DNS server vulnerability, and many more problems this year, I no longer have faith in Microsoft Products.

  3. Myth of efficiency. on Multitasking Harmful To Productivity · · Score: 1

    Well worth the read.

  4. Re:How would you guys like to see star trek contin on First Peeks At Enterprise · · Score: 1

Just movies. The series is tired. Watching Babylon 5 ruined trek almost completely for me. (I liked B5 much more). Currently Farscape is the only series worth watching.

  6. But have they perfected the failure rate yet? on Seagate Claims New Drive Silent and Fastest · · Score: 1

Everytime I have had a system with a Seagate drive it has died within 3 years. I just assumed that they've built that into the drives.

All the other hard drive brands have always lasted longer for me than I wanted to keep the computer.

Exactly! If people don't care about music they're not going to be downloading it, or buying it.

I would say that people who buy more CD's are more likely to use Napster as well.

  9. This can only be a good thing! on Apple Dropping CRTs for LCDs · · Score: 1

I can't see why people would gripe about this. If apple sells more flat panels the cost will go down and the quality of flat panels will go up.

one third the desk space, one third the power consumption, one third the heat. Maybe this could stop rolling blackouts in California with the reduction in energy usage. (G.W. Bush certianly can't fix the problem, maybe apple can.)

Ever since I saw the kitchen/dining area in "Total Recall" I have wanted some huge flat panel displays. We get closer to this.

It'd also be nice if I could just roll up my monitor and tote it to the next lan party. Sherman Peabody had a kick-ass chalkboard, I want that in a monitor!

Those discs are coasters or modern art now. You can't watch them anymore.

My only hope is that Microsoft suffers the same fate as Divx in it's rental software venture.

The day Divx went out of business I went down to the local Circuit City and bought a useless divx coaster for $1.00 and then danced on it in the parking lot. Where we gonna dance when Micro$oft does the same? Seattle's a bit of a trip from Holland, MI!

  13. Flat Panel display sales will pick up too. on Why 2002 Will Be Better Than 2001 · · Score: 1

When flat panel prices become affordable I think well see them start to sell like crazy. The energy and space savings are huge and companies with lots of CRT's are going to appreciate the electric and air conditioning savings that they get.

If the price comes down quick then LCD is going to be hugh, if it takes another two years then I think that LED flat panels may be selling like crazy.

When mandrakesoft gets around to doing a secure-kernel version of 8.0 I hope that this time it will be able to run more than 1 Samba user at a time. In 7.1 & 7.2 the secure-kernel makes multiple users impossible with Samba.

That's my only gripe with 7.2 for now. Other than that it's pretty darn nice.

  17. Switch your company to Flat Panel Displays on Why Don't Servers Support Power Management? · · Score: 1

You folks in CA would probably be better off switching to Flat Panel monitors. Looks like about a 70% power savings compared to a tube monitor. From what I hear about the price gouging on power out there it'd probably be cheaper to buy the new FDP units than continue operation your old monitors.

Besides, once you start buying them maybe their price will come down enough so that we can do the same thing.

When is someone going to come out with an affordable backup system so that we can ensure the reliability of these large data stores?

Contemporary Cybernetics is actually proud that it costs $1.63 USD /GB to use their drives/media compared to $2.20 /GB to use DLT. Both of these prices are insanely high.

Backup costs have barely come down in price in the last 7-10 years (only about 40%). While disk space has become about a thousand times more affordable.

Can someone please come up with a more affordable solution?

I have to agree here. You can't tell someone they're an idiot for what they believe and then expect them to listen to you while you try to persaude them that they are wrong.

I had to wince when I saw Jamie on TV8 (WOODTV, a local station). I'm anti-filter and yet Jamie seemed like a radical loonie from the clips that TV8 showed. I thought when I saw it, "he's not doing any good for the cause".

I understand Jamie's passion for the cause. I just hope he can tone it down to a level that might work in Holland MI. Don't slap the people you need to reach out to.

And being a Holland-er all my life I can say that words like "memes" scare a lot of Holland folk. Words like "protect your children" don't.
