  1. Slashdotted now, but... on Open Source Art? · · Score: 1

I managed to get a peek at the "C" one (linescape.cpp - spot the deliberate mistake). There's windows binarys on the site but I couldn't compile the source on my linux box (no windows.h !!!).
Theres no license statement or copyright statement in the code, The source may be open, but I don't think RMS would approve. ;)

  2. My letter to "Software Choice" on Perens Pushes "Sincere Choice" for Software · · Score: 1

    Dear Sirs,
I write with reference to the story linked from your news page entitled "ISC response to SF Gate, Perens Article". I note with interest that the linked document appears to be a document in Microsoft's "Word" format. Regretably I am unable to open this document since I do not pirate software and cannot afford a license for MS Office when I only write the occaisional letter. I would be most interested to learn why software choice chose to publish in this format, requiring a software purchase to allow me to view it, rather than in html - which, I would suggest, is a more appropriate format for web publishing. This would also have permitted me a free choice of software with which to view it. Isn't this what your organisation is promoting?

I look forward to recieving your explanation.

Theres a very interesting IP debate going on, but I'm curious about another point the author made.

Early photographs were not in color, and were not as permanent a medium as oil and canvas. In fact today's printed photographs are still less durable than an oil and canvas painting

Where does digital fit in? Hard drives last, say, 5 years. Mag tape degrades over time. Even CDs will only take so much abuse (I've had more CDR coasters than I care to mention). Sure you can make backups but over time how many digital images are likely to survive?
We all want a 'permanent record' of a wedding, but what do we mean by permanent? Do we want them to last for our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or just until the divorce?

I just installed it on my gnome desktop and it speeded the load of Writer from 25s to 5s. Yes I know those times suck, my box is a bit busy right now & I desperately need to invest in new hardware (or a cluster of old hardware ;) ) Look at the improvement though! Cracking package, hope it proves to be stable.

I'm not sure whether the samba teams greatest contribution is to open source or to the smb protocol itself. The one thing that is for sure is that without samba it would be much harder to produce a viable migration path away from M$. The way samba is progressing I wonder how many organisations will continue to operate samba servers long after they have purged M$ from their networks?

My favourite samba feature - vfs modules!

It would, any fool could see that. So... given that governments usually have a high concentration of fools... we could reasonably assume they already worked that out. Which can only mean that they want to control it. Now why might a government want to supress computer security alerts...?
