  1. Re:That's not how a PET scanner works on GeV Acceleration In 3 Centimeters · · Score: 1

You are correct with respect to the image acquisition, however you are neglecting the fact that accelerators are typically required for radionuclide production. The most common radionuclide for PET (F18) has a very short half life. If your hospital has money and expertise you can install your own local cyloctron and radiochemistry facility. Otherwise you rely on the express sugar water courier service to get your FDG - also not cheap, and may not be feasible the farther away your are from the nearest accelerator. A small, portable solution would be a wonderful advance for rural hospitals and developing countries.

  2. Guy Gavriel Kay and more. on A Good Summer Read? · · Score: 1

All his novels are exceptional. He is pioneer of the "historical fantasy" micro-genre. Song for Arbonne, Tigana, and especially The Lions of Al-Rassan are incredible. His earlier trilogy, The Fionvar Tapestry is less impressive, but still enjoyable. Most recently he put out a duology - The Sarantine Mosaic which is loosely based on Byzantium - is on par with his best works. I will also add another vote for George RR Martin. Brutal, in your face fantasy that reads more like historical fiction. Great plot twists and character development. On the subject of historical fiction, I would highly recommend Dorothy Dunnet's Lymond Chronicles, which detail the exploits of the fictional scoundrel Lymond in medieval Scotland. Lymond is a sort of Han Solo/Robin Hood/Lancelot hybrid. Finally I would recommend some of Robert Heinlein's more obscure stuff. The collection of short stories, The Green Hills of Earth has some great material. Especially the title story. That could make an incredible movie given the right people. Also I enjoyed I Will Fear No Evil more than I did his acclaimed Stranger In A Strange Land.

As of the Demo, and I believe the shipped version, only nvidia cards are supported for the linux port. This is really only because the drivers from ATI and the rest don't support S3TC texture compression.

  5. Re:UnrealEd...fixed? Better? on UT2003 Gone Gold, Ships with Linux Support · · Score: 5, Informative

UnrealEd has not been ported to linux, and as of now there is no plan to do so. There was some discussion on the mailing list of a community developed port of the Editor, however this was more or less ruled out. Basically they are concerned about releasing documentation on the engine libraries, which change often and would "open up a ton of cheats we couldn't detect" (Ryan C Gordon).
