Spot on. MVS is the pits. Big Blue considers it the enterprise operating system, and pushes it big time. Thing is though, VM is much easier and better. I was VM support (the system programmers called me when they had a problem). Want to test new software with your production data? With no production outage? VM is the way. Just generate a second level system on VM and test away in safety. Want to give hundreds, even THOUSANDS of users their OWN ENTIRE MACHINE (virtual, of course)? VM is the way. IBM tried several times to kill VM but protests from the customers saved it. For the great unwashed (that's you 700l h4x0r), VM is a hypervisor, that virtualized the real hardware. You could then run MVS, AIX, LINUX, even VM on top of VM. As many copies as you wanted. Even I/O was transparently shared. Leave the dark side of MVS, and come to VM.
I think that wireless will ultimately be the answer to the broadband problem.
Most of the cost in bringing any service into the home, be it cable, internet,
or telephone, is the cost of running a wire out there. If we could do all of
the same stuff wirelessly, then it could be a lot cheaper.
The cost of locating antennas and transmitters on top of the higher mountains
around the area is not cheap. The hilltops are privately owned, and these
natural monopolies provide a very good income for the owners. They rent space
to the FM broadcasters, pager services, cell phone companies, taxi services,
state police, etc.
Because some of us won't waste our time and money
on SciAm any more. It has turned into Science Lite for
Dummies. If there happens to be a relevant article,
I depend on others here to let me know to take a
look at it.
Oh no! How do I keep Alan Ralsky out of my head!?
