Jacob Appelbaum and Roger Dingledine talked about this at the 30c3 conference last December. Here's a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJNxbpbHA-I They talk about this around the 39:55 mark. Basically they weren't thrilled about microsoft doing such a thing, but on the other hand if the attack had been malicious it would have taken down the entire TOR network.

My family has had a player piano for over 60 years. It still works great. The most we've had to worry about from a maintenance standpoint was occasionally replacing an old hose.

I don't know how much of Orson Scott Card's money goes toward directly supporting his political causes, but we know that it is at least possible for money spent on science fiction books to go toward agendas that we might otherwise oppose completely.

10% of his income goes to his church which in turn supports his political causes.

While I'm sorry that your schools couldn't implement a good education plan, it doesn't mean that the idea is a bad one. How many times do we have to hear of someone believing the Nigeria scam or some other fraud before we consider this necessary? The point is that not all parents know about these dangers and the kids have to be warned. Yes, it would be better if all parents were keeping up with the world around them, but they aren't. I know it's hard to believe, but some people don't use the internet. Hell, I had to teach my Grandfather how to use a credit card at a gas pump last year. He's been using cash for over 80 years and couldn't buy gas when a station was closed (he needs glasses to read). Just because we know these things doesn't mean that the parents and guardians of children these days do, so it's important to make sure that the younger generation does.

Well first, I know that my parents taught me about the dangers of lightning storms, and I will do the same for my children.

Second, choosing between the danger of raising an overly paranoid child and a safe one is easy for any parent.

Third, that's just the media. You should also teach your children not to believe everything that they read or see on tv.

Making our children aware of the dangers in the world around them is the point here. Statistical differences in the probabilities of those dangers is not.

My CSC316 teacher was talking about this in class this afternoon, before the article was posted. The CS department at my school is fairly large, and they already have programs to compare assignments to code produced by fellow students, previous graduates, and code posted on the web.
Teachers aren't stupid, and I suspect they'll find a way to check for this before long.

The sad part is that according to my old java 1 professor, they flunk about 100 students a semester on cheating alone.

If you think that's bad, you should read some of his other columns. He writes a column called uncle Orson reviews everything for a local paper. This is not a man whose opinion you want to trust. His political columns aren't much better. I love the ender series, but it's hard to match them up with the man who writes these sorts of columns.
