hey Mr. Riley Fucking Hollingsworth: we may not know your qualifications, but a lot of people know who Hans-Werner Braun is...

not only is Hans-Werner Braun a network engineer, he is one of the most fucking impressive network engineers around. he's probably been building networks longer than you've been alive. not only did he spend some time as the network architect for Teledesic, Hans-Werner was a principal investigator at Merit on the NSFNET project. (in other words, he was in charge of the Merit portion of the project.) that's right: he's one of the people that started the fucking internet you enjoy today, period! (see the Living Internet page on the NSFNET for a little context.)

i hate to rain on your parade, but...

if you find a bargain from american tower and you seriously considering buying one of these wonderful structures for something like a ham radio or broadband isp site, make sure you know what you'll be paying every year after the sale.

even if you pick one of these beasts up extraordinarily cheap, like for say, $25,000, your local tax assessor may still value it for a quarter million because other cell towers in the county may have recently sold for that amount. that may mean you're on the hook for a couple/few thousand a year in taxes.

then think about insurance... what will you do when some drunken idiot climbs your 250-ft tower, falls off, and kills himself? (believe me, these remote places are the types of place that high schoolers seek out for their weekend activities...) when the family sues you into next year, you had better been paying your premiums on a $2,000,000 liability insurance policy... there's another couple thousand a year.

then think about maintenance... that strobe at the top of the tower needs to be monitored on a daily basis and maintained... the tower will need to be inspected every few years... etc...

sure, one could try to offset his costs by finding a lessee, but if these suckers were money makers, american tower wouldn't be selling one to you on the cheap...

    just one word: tailhook

wasn't the highest ranking female in the army forced to retire after she levied harassment allegations? iirc they put the kabash on her next promotion after she made a formal complaint. wasn't she vindicated? if that's how they treat the highest-ranked female, i'd hate to see how they treat the chicks in the trenches...

what was the deal with that sargeant major of the army dude mckinney?

i think your experience may be skewed a little bit.

i worked at argonne as well other public sector places and i can tell you it's not your typical public sector, civil servant kinda place. it's a really cool place to work compared to say a university it dept. i think they pay a little better too.

i'm sure other cool public sector workplaces exist... just don't believe argonne is the standard that public sector jobs in general should be judged by... argonne is at the extreme high end
