    Its strange really; Islam is almost the other way around.

    First they had their expansion and conversion at sword point its true, but then there was a remarkable phase of civilisation where the Islamic world was far *far* more advanced both scientifically and socially than the Christian powers of the same period.

    Now Islam almost seems to have reverted.

    There are those who say that this is actually the result of a strategy of the Christian powers; they realised that they couldn't defeat Islam on the battlefield so they focussed on destroying the Islamic culture and society by more subtle means.

    I wonder what will happen to RAF Tornados that get hit by this laser instead of a patriot missile? Maybe there will be fewer friendly fire casualties as a result?

    I've played enough civ to know that when you get the SDI defense youj force build them everywhere you can as fast as possible.

    And then you nuke any potential enemies who don't already have SDI defense.

    In fact, I can scarce believe how the modern world is so much like the endgame of civ...

    Yeah thats why I figure I'd never become a serial killer.

    I mean, to make a difference to this planet I'd have to kill *billions* not just a few hundred here and a few hundred there.

    Even if I managed to kill a million people, the human race would make that back up in the blink of an eye.

    So I figure, what the heck? Its just not worth it.

    Besides, the human race seems (on the whole) to have a defective survival instinct (eg cyclists) so I am sure that they will, ahem, take care of themselves.

    Actually I recall it was the same back when the World Wide Web started off; at first there was nothing much except some research sites and .com's and then all of a sudden it seemed that everyone and their *dog* had a website and that it was invariably crap.

    Maybe blogs have improved and I should give them a chance...

    My main problem with the bloggers whose blogs I've tried to read is not their lazyness or balancedness but the way that they seem to think that other people are actually interested in reading about the latest meds their psychiatrist has prescribed them or the visit to the vet with their kitten that got a splinter in its foot.

    Ie; their insufferable Lameness.

    (and to me /. is not a blog, its more like usenet but via http instead of nntp).

    Thats a generic problem with all industrialisation.

    In fact, I'd say that industrialisation has fucked up almost everything it touches; the only thing that industrialisation hasn't fucked up is productivity.

    But the industrialisation of music (more generally, entertainment), education and warfare (to name three) have royally screwed the human race.

    No he doesn't; but when the USA do bomb people, they tend to be brown people.

    When was the last time they bombed white people? That would be the Serbs. The Serbs were persecuting Muslims (brown people).

    And the time before that, the Germans. The Germans were persecuting Jews (brown people).

    The pattern emerging here is that when white people move in on Americas 'action', they get bombed.

    But brown people just have to be brown, thats all.
