    There are two problems with this. (1) Space is pretty big and something big enough to hurt us is relatively small. We're unlikely to spot it until it's too late to do anything but rape the nearest moderately attractive person. (2) What are you going to do about it anyway? We have exactly zero realistic options for dealing with something like this other than raping the nearest moderately attractive person.

    To be fair, there is a pretty strong history in Scottish politics that leads to replies like that. The Conservatives literally destroyed themselves in Scotland for life during the 1980s; it is unlikely they wil return in any numbers until my kids are of voting age. And do bear in mind that voters who stop and give a considered rationale for their voting decisions are unlikely to be good fodder for a sound-bite.

    This has more to do with the structure of the media than it's ability to provide useful information. Rolling 24-hour news has an insatiable demand for new content in order to be the network that's first with the next big thing. Back when Clinton was first elected and I was eleven, the papers had pages and pages discussing the published policy positions of candidates, not replay after replay of off-the-cuff soundbites ("spread the wealth", anyone?).

    Oh dear. Take a course in Newtonian mechanics, will you, before you post any more of this stuff? Things orbiting the earth are falling. Chucking something off the ISS in the opposite direction to your direction of travel will just change its orbital height very slightly. Try throwing something up in the air. Does it hit you on the head a few seconds later? It's just the same in space, it's just that you also happen to be moving sideways very quickly.

    During the Poll Tax palaver in the UK in the late eighties, people delighted in finding more and more ridiculous things to write checks on. IIRC, the government was presented with cheques painted on scrap vans, carved into gravestones, engraved onto a tombstone, and on one occasion written on the side of a cow. HMRC being humourous types, they cashed them all.

    I just did a little bit of Googling; it's so easy it's embarrassing. The printers are in the hundreds of pounds range, the holograms can be run off for pennies in a large run, the embossing can be done with easily purchased tools. Magstripe readers and writers are a couple of hundred quid.

    Heh. I think OP was just venting. I know how he feels. An 8.04 update a month ago broke noapic on my install. If I try to boot noapic, kernel panic. If I boot without it, my mouse doesn't work and my wireless is dead. Despite lots of help from the forums and IRC, nobody has gotten to the bottom of it, and after a month I am feeling OP's pain.

    True. In general, you don't need to be really secure, you just need to be more secure than your next door neighbour. Generally, planting a rose bush under your window and leaving some lights on accomplishes that.

    Someone who knows what they are doing is a bit more difficult - I speak from experience. I grew up in riding schools, which generally have a lot of very expensive tack sitting in very insecure tackrooms, which often contain a dog. More than once I've seen or heard of an empty tackroom with a dead dog lying on the floor with a stoved-in skull.

    By definition, a non-musician doesn't have a clue what it means to play one. If you ever do manage to climb out of your cultural hole, I can assure you that at the top of the hill lies an experience better than sex or drugs. It's worth the climb.

    I won't even mention what someone might find worthwhile in someone who has dedication and inter-personal skills.

    Metal parts can potentially crack, any components with liquids in them (batteries, capacitors, etc) can freeze and split. Certainly they will be keeping their fingers crossed that it might come back to life next year, but the odds are low.

    Erm, because any law enforcement organisation with an ounce of clue has very strict procedures on evidence handling and chain of custody so that this approach doesn't work. It's been tried, and succeeded on several occasions, until the cops learnt their lesson.

    As an enforced IE6 (aaargh) user at work, I can confirm that whatever the hell they are coding the front page for, it sure ain't IE. It seems ok in FF3 for me, though. I would still like the option for it to look like it did back in 2001; keep it the same long enough, and it will become a classic.

    On the face of it, it looks pretty good, and perhaps for certain types of application it might make sense. However, sit and work out what you're getting for your money - it is pretty expensive compared to a dedicated server.

    My understanding was the original theory was to provide virtualisation in such a way that you could easily add or subtract the services you required, with an API to control them, etc, meaning you could reduce your fixed costs but have the capacity to handle major load events (so, say, CNN.com doesn't fall over on the next 9/11, etc). Then the marketers got hold of it and reduced it's usefulness to the point where it basically means "the internet".
